Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Last Sunday’s game really showed the no quit attitude our team has. That’s the word for now – No Quit! I’m sure all of you have read what folks have been writing; questions like: is this the worst Viking team ever? That’s actually a very easy answer for me – heavens no. I think this year is as much about how our team was affected by the lockout as it is about the individual mistakes are team and coaches have made throughout the year.

New head coach, new offensive coordinator, new defensive scheme, no mini camps and virtually no training camp. All these factors come into play.

Here’s a little trip down memory lane for some of you. For those of you that remember the 3 – 13 year, as I do, this year’s team doesn’t compare. The 1984 team was beat up in practice and by the time the game came around they were worn out and their play showed the results. This year’s team is still playing with a tenacity that evokes respect from every team that plays them. Although the 1984 team and this team do share the similar fact that, both teams had pro bowl talent on the team.

In 1984 we had a coaching mistake that was primarily responsible for the record. This year’s team is a little harder to figure out, but I’ll let you know where I’m thinking. I don’t think the Vikings will make any drastic moves at the end of the year. I think Coach Frazier will be back and I think with the no quit playing style of our team he deserves to come back. With that said; it’s the Coach’s job to right the ship and he may make some changes; coaches and players. And while we’re on the subject of changes – don’t be surprised with end of contract changes, same as Sidney Rice last year. This will always happen in today’s football and sometimes there’s nothing the team can do to change the outcome.

I mentioned in an earlier newsletter (right after last year’s draft as I recall) I thought the Vikings would draft for the offensive line in the next draft. I still feel they’ll look here if they get the chance. Christian Ponder is a keeper and will need the protecting. The team will have to figure out what other holes need filling and fix these thru free agency and the draft.

My last thought for today regards the play of Christian Ponder last week. The turnovers last week really don’t concern me – these were growing pains only. I can’t imagine the pressure you must feel when you get behind early. I’m sure the feeling he had throughout the game was: I need to make a play. I can’t equate this emotional impact to football and the control it has over your decision making, but I can to stock trading. In stock trading you feel you have to be right every time; you’re losing your money. The truth is: the best traders out there are wrong 60% of the time; what they do is limit their losses and maximize their gains. When you lose the emotional response of needing to be right and gain the understanding that a lot of your trades will be wrong; you start making better decisions and you make them quicker. For Christian I think it’s the same thing. He’ll see the play isn’t there; throw the ball away even if that means we need to punt and we’re still behind. Make the most of every play – even if the most is setting up for the next series. He’ll get that part of his game together – I only hope I can figure out stock trading.

53/70 HOF Quest:

Not a lot of fun information today – here’s why: I had a long conversation with one of the senior selectors on the Hall of Fame selection committee. As an outcome of that conversation I’m shifting my timing of when I send out my letters. To get in front of the senior selector committee at the best time with our quest is really during the off season. The two seniors are selected around the same time the Hall of Fame is inducting its latest inductees. Basically the third week in August the decisions are made for the two seniors.

The process involves the nine senior selectors to submit their list of fifteen people they think should be discussed at the August meeting. The Hall of Fame tallies the votes and submits the top fifteen for review. This means I want to send out my information in May, June and July to get our guys on everyone’s list of fifteen.

We have not forgotten!

Club News:

At this Sunday’s game we’ll be voting for offensive player of the year, defensive player of the year and coach of the year. If you’re not going to make it to the game and want to send in your votes – please have them to me shortly after the Saints game.

Our Helmets for the Holidays drawing is still active – this is the one prize you don’t need to be present to win. If you want to participate in this please stop by Endless Food and Fun this Sunday or Saturday December 24th for the Redskins game.

If you don’t hear from me again before the holidays – Merry Christmas everyone, best wishes to all.

Aside: The Vikes win out!

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Well the team is 2 and 8 and I can honestly say I didn’t think we would be here. Green Bay really beat us and I think this stung the team as well as it did me. The only thing I can say about this game is: remember this game; we’ll chat again in the future. We’ll get our chance again and that victory will be even sweeter.

The Raiders game wasn’t much better from an emotional standpoint. This was a home loss and another game we were in at the end. All the Raiders fans I talked with were thankful that Adrian was out for three-quarters of the game, not because that wanted to see Adrian injured, because they felt they would have lost if he had played the entire game; they knew we could have won.

From here on in I expect to see incredible effort from our guys. This is a brutally honest game and nobody wants to put on tape they quit. Actually our record could be what loosens the team. Our guys need to make plays; they need to play on the same page all game. Maybe there’s no fear of making a mistake now or thinking about what they need to do next. At this point all they need to do is play with their hearts; play with the same passion that allowed them to become professional football players in the first place. I’m a believer that nobody makes it to the NFL wanting a contract; they make it because they love the game and are willing to make any sacrifice required to play at the elite level of the NFL. What allows certain players to rise above the rest is passion for the game – this is what I’m looking for from here on in.

As fans we need the same passion; anyone can get behind a winning team, a real fan sticks with his/her team during the tough times.

Club News:

The Denver Broncos game on December 4th has been rescheduled to 10:00am Pacific time. This is part of the NFL’s flex scheduling; please change your calendars to reflect this change.

I want thank everyone for supporting our canned food drive for the Orange County Food Bank. Once again your generosity was fantastic and I’m proud to be a part of this group. This year in particular the food bank has been low; the lingering economy has really hurt their support. So; thanks again, I’m glad we were able to continue our support.

Our Helmets for the Holidays drawing is beginning: this year we have an autographed jersey by Jared Allen and a mini helmet/football set by Alan Page as prizes. The drawing will be December 24th at the Redskins game. You do not need to be present to win.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Because we’re at the bye week and the importance of the new stadium for our team – I want to discuss this topic first this week.

I read a good article by Sid Hartman earlier in the month; I’ll paraphrase a little of what I got out of that article. First of all – don’t think the Vikings won’t leave the state, even if their first intention is to stay in Minnesota. Remember the Lakers and the North Stars; both of these franchises left. How about the Rams, Raiders, Browns and Colts for examples of NFL teams that moved. It is a real possibility and the only option available if the State of Minnesota declines to participate.

Here’s where it gets interesting: the Vikings as a franchise has brought in enough tax revenue to pay for all the States commitments to all four of the professional sports commitments from 1961 through 2009, the date this report was done. Report came from the Minnesota Sports Facilities Commission (group that runs the dome). This includes the addition expenses it cost the state to lure professional hockey and basketball back to the state; which was considerably more than had they retained the original teams.

The way I interpret what I’ve read is: last season the Vikings brought in $20 million in tax revenue. With the way things go; I would expect this number to increase each year, unless somebody knows something different than I’ve experienced in my life. My best guess is the State’s commitment to the stadium would be paid back in 12 – 15 years. I kept my last truck longer than that; I’m thinking the state would get 10 to 15 years of “profit” from their commitment to a stadium and those would be the more valuable years when you measure in dollars. This revenue were discussing does not take into consideration all the other revenue sources; hotels, bars, restaurants and their related revenue streams from providing those jobs and related benefits to the state that comes from having those folks employed. (I’m guessing the gas tax from the beer trucks delivering their wares alone is plenty; I’ve been to Minnesota).

Then when I look at the short term benefit of building a new stadium and the related development surrounding the stadium (when you consider the Arden Hills location) – during a recession, I really don’t see the down side to the stadium deal. Remember that the meaning of short term in major development projects is measured in years – this would be great for Minnesota, help them through the recession.

And, as all of us know – football could be played at the Coliseum or Rose Bowl starting next year without much difficulty. Stay connected on this issue – this is important.

Okay – some football talk. Christian Ponder had a great game against the Panthers; Cam Newton gets the press, but, Christian got the “Win”. (Well the team got the W; I’m just choosing to discuss Ponder at the moment). Christian had a 102.7 passer rating for the game and again third downs were tremendous. No interceptions a TD pass and 236 yards – these are respectable numbers. He also got sacked four times; what makes these different is: he didn’t lose many yards with each sack. I believe only a couple of yards per loss. I expect to see good things the second half of the year.

53/70 HOF Quest:

Nothing this week; more to come.

Club News:

For all the new members that don’t really understand what we’re about this paragraph is for you. We are a licensed Non-Profit company in the State of California. We’re currently supporting four different charities; Page Education Foundation, The Link, The Boys to Men Circle, and the Keyboarding Club at South High School in Bakersfield California. All these charities have a Minnesota Viking tie and all these charities help children. I do use the word children a little loosely, but at my age I’m entitled.

The Page Educational Foundation grants scholarships for college, the Keyboarding Club supports technical computer skills for high school students, the Boy’s to Men Circle started helping High School boys become better citizens and has been growing into middle school and supporting both sexes along with their High School program and the Link helps children of all ages for a variety of issues. A lot of the Link’s work is around inner city children and the social and economic hardships relating to inner city life.

Alan Page founded the Page Education Foundation and his wife still runs the company today. Jim Marshall and Oscar Reed were the founders of the Link. Oscar Reed runs the Boys to Men Circle program and Brent McClanahan runs the Keyboarding Club, located in Bakersfield California.

We play Green Bay this Monday night November 14th. The following Sunday we’ll be meeting at EFF, November 20, 2011. This will be our Can Food Drive to support The Orange County Food Bank.

Please bring your cans and dry goods to this game. We’ll be having our special drawings to support this effort.

Endless Food and Fun change. After a review of how things are working at EFF; we’re going to make a second half of the season change. EFF will no longer support the omelet breakfasts prior to opening the buffet line. To support our group and prepare the buffet line at the same time could only be supported by adding more expense; basically more folks. We are going to keep the omelets available, but only with the buffet line. If you’re a breakfast fan, the omelets will be available at 10:00 am with a purchase of a buffet line wrist band.

This is being done to control costs and still provide the best available food options and service to our club. The omelets are something that EFF is only doing for us and were negotiated prior to the start of the year. As part of my original agreement with Andrew, we were going to evaluate club specific changes to the food preparation to ensure that his business didn’t incur any additional expenses related to our group. I felt it was best to make this change now; after a better understanding of what’s involved with preparing the food line. Basically – this allows EFF to focus as a normal day with the changes of opening the buffet line early and adding the breakfast option. (He can keep his people focused during the buffet line preparation.)

For those interested in the buffet line; remember you can purchase a wrist band as soon as you enter the building at the front desk. If you’re wearing Vikings colors; no need to tell them you’re with the club. If you’re coming from Church and wearing regular cloths; please mention you’re with the club.

Thanks for your understanding.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Well there have been some interesting things happening with our team lately. We got the Bear’s that just beat us, the Packers who barely beat us; Christian Ponder’s starting debut, some player issues and a stadium to contend with.

As for the Chicago game; I think it was a combination of two things. Chicago was embarrassed by their Monday night game and played above their ability against us and we didn’t play well, end of story.

Christian’s debut against the Packers – now that’s interesting conversation. When I came back from the club and reviewed Christian’s numbers – I was surprised. His numbers weren’t that good; I was expecting to see better numbers, the team looked like a team for the first time this year. So I think I got a grip on why I thought things were better.

First point; third down conversions were tons better and especially in the fourth quarter. The second half started with Green Bay taking control by scoring points, but our team didn’t quit and in the fourth quarter we took it back offensively; primarily on Christian’s third down conversions.

Secondly the deep threat was back. We tried more deep passes and we completed more deep passes. We started the game with about a 75 yard completion and I think we had multiple 20 yard completions.

With our team going up top, picking up third downs (and a lot of them through the air) – my last point is Adrian’s game. Adrian had 175 yards rushing (quietly). It only took part of one game for the world champions; the only undefeated team in the league to need to change their defense and Adrian took advantage. We played the Packer’s tougher than any other opponent they faced so far this year. We lost, but we had a good game.

I left very impressed with Christian – he’s a winner, can’t wait for Sunday.

Player issues: Bernard Berrian’s issues really haven’t been disclosed. I don’t have any details, so I’ll leave it at that. I will say I like Coach Frazier’s approach. Coach Frazier looks like a calm rational person to me, and I believe he is, but what I like is he’s dealing with issues his way. I feel better knowing our coach is coaching his way, with his confidence of what’s right for the team. We’ll eventually find out what the media tells us – maybe someday we’ll find out the truth.

With Cook – I’m better off not talking, this one is disappointing. If what’s been reported is true – Chris is in serious trouble. At the very least he’s going to have the next twelve months thinking about court cases and his court defense. He’ll be dreaming about when he can think about football defense again. This is really disappointing for the Vikings organization, for the players and for us fans. This will be the first and last time I mention this topic. I complement the Vikings quick action along with their patience to see how this unfolds.

First the city of Minneapolis is trying to get into the stadium picture. The Viking’s were told by the state to go find a local partner and they did – Arden Hills. The city of Minneapolis sat on their hands for years without wanting to participate. Now that it looks like the team will leave the city – they don’t care if they hurt the Vikings chances with Arden Hills, they look like they don’t care if the team leaves Minnesota. They seem to be acting like four year olds whose mother told them they couldn’t have a cookie because it’s too close to dinner time. (In adult language – the city is acting like they just found out the team’s generated revenue will be leaving Minneapolis and had they been smarter, maybe they could have participated in that revenue stream. They gambled the State wouldn’t participate at all.)

Now we have legislators in the street thinking they’re part of occupying Minneapolis or something (Okay I made up the occupying Minneapolis stuff.) These are the same guys that were handing out money to anyone who came to Minnesota; said they were from Minnesota, got their checks and jumped back into their bus and headed back to Chicago. These fools are qualified to work in California! Their claim is: they would rather let the team leave then be strong-armed into a deal. What are they talking about – the Wilf’s are already putting up more money than owners in large market cities. This is getting nuts and throwing around words like strong-armed because they think I’m too stupid to see what they’re doing and that I might actually believe these nuts; well they got another thing coming. If I wasn’t in the middle of our 53/70 commitment – I’d be chatting with the state of Minnesota.

If you haven’t checked out our shopping section on our site lately – please go and check this out. If you’re shopping for Vikings gear – it couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is click on our “Shop for your Vikings Gear” button on the left edge of our home page. This will open a page with categories – pick the category you want and the items appear and there are lots of items in each category, in every size.

Now I had a question on how to enter the Amazon site through our site when you’re not shopping for Vikings gear. Well to do that; scroll down the home page until you see the Amazon looking add on the left side of the page. The small AMAZON.COM button on top of the Amazon add (or banner) is what you click. This brings you to the Amazon home page and you are now shopping on Amazon for all those non-Viking items. Remember – we get a finders commission, you pay nothing extra.

This Sunday’s game starts at 10:00 am against the Panthers. The next week is our bye week and then we play Green Bay again on Monday night November 14th. For those who can make the drive – we will be meeting on that Monday night at Endless Food and Fun.

November 20, 2011 – Can Food Drive. It’s the Raider’s game for the rest of you.

The week following our Monday night game with Green Bay will be our Can Food Drive. Please bring your cans to this game. We’ll be having our special drawings to support this effort.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

The monkey is off our back – now that we started winning, it’s time to make it a streak. The Vikings looked good and every part of the team excelled in the first quarter of the Arizona game, offense, defense and special teams. The 34 to 10 victory must have had some fans nervous in the second half, but Adrian put a calming influence on all of us. Adrian ran for key yards and key first downs as the team ran the clock and closed the game out in the second half. The defense looked good the second half – having some time on the sidelines to regroup and rest was a thing of beauty.

The first half was the Vikings typical – they looked like the best team in the league. Again the defensive line was applying pressure – Jared and Brian both got sacks, two each. Both came off the field with injuries in one series and came back the next as if nothing was wrong. For the season Jared has 8 ˝ sacks and Brian has 4 ˝. With these two ends and Kevin and Remi in the middle – this probably is the best defensive line playing this year.

With all that said – the best part of last week’s game was the attitude. I read someone describe Adrian’s running as running angry; I agree. He was running over people and clobbered some poor soul trying to stop him a couple of yards from the end zone. Jared has been on fire and some of the sacks this year are not just catching the quarterback and he goes down – they’ve been decleaters to borrow an old Madden term. The leaders on this team are leading and that’s nothing but good.

I typically don’t look ahead in these letters, but this week I’ll change my style a tweak. So I’ll start my thoughts by going backward – go figure. I read an interview Bud Grant gave a week ago and Bud watches football from a coach’s perspective. He said (and I’m paraphrasing) that the Vikings first four games could have all gone the other way if only one play was different. He went on to give examples for a single play had it gone the other way – the Minnesota Vikings would be undefeated at this time. I think there is truth in that statement and this week we play the Bears and the Bears game is as much a rivalry as the Packers games are. Only this week the Viking’s come with the best pass rush in the league and the best running attack in the league and there angry and they don’t like the Bears anyway. I’m thinking there are some Bear fans out there that are saying were catching the Vikings at the wrong time. I guess I should mention – the Bears pass protection and run stopping abilities looked horrendous on Monday night and quite frankly what the Lions brought to the table last Monday is nothing compared to what our team brings. This week’s game is going to be a good one.

I have to say a few words regarding the stadium. Did I really read that the state of Minnesota’s latest hurdle to throw at the team is that the Stadium can’t get done in time? And this when it’s been the state all along that’s been delaying the stadium deal. I know they’re concerned with costs, but the longer you delay the more it costs. Not to mention all the jobs that could have been started by now – I swear Minnesota is starting to tick me off. At least the Wilf’s seem to have more patience than me and they seem to be doing everything in their power to keep the team in Minnesota – pretty classy if you ask me. I know if it was me; I’d have thrown my hands in the air and I would have sold the team (and all the buyers out there want to move them to LA). I think everyone should know that this is a viable scenario – stay connected on this issue and help ensure this thing gets done. Minnesota Momentum is a great place to get connected too for information.

53/70 HOF Quest:

This week I spotlight Mick Tingelhoff. Please see my 53/70 HOF Quest attached letter for the details.

Club News:

I want to thank all of you for showing up to the game last Sunday; it’s nice to know that there are lots of loyal fans out here.

For all of you that haven’t been on our website lately – you should give it a look, it’s looking good. If you’ve missed a newsletter – they’re all posted. The photo gallery is getting filled in, the game ball is posted, Adrian’s rushing totals is active – the site looks good. And now that California has gotten out of the way - we can again offer links through our website to places like Amazon.com. Anyone that goes through our site (click on the link in our site) will have a portion of their purchase sent to the club – a finder’s fee. It cost’s nothing for you and we get our sliver of the pie – and not just on Viking merchandise. If you go through our site and buy a coffee table – we get the finder’s fee. So – if you’re an online Christmas shopper, click our site first and you’re helping our charities.

I want to congratulate our winners on last week’s Alan Page autograph, Jared Allen’s autograph, Antoine Winfield’s autograph and John Swain’s autograph. I’m sure you’re all happy with your prizes. For those of you that weren’t there I’d like to describe our winner’s elation when she won the Jared Allen mini helmet.

Our winner Zoe – in her typical way, was teasing all of us by trying to take the mini helmet before halftime. She almost made it past me; but I’m one sharp cookie, and I saved the prize. Now to understand Zoe you have to recognize that she is a little challenged in the height department – I think she stands 25 inches tall. She’s learned to run and she can stand still, but I’m not sure she can walk at this time. At one point (after she’d visited Toyman) she got a little upset when she lost her ball, but Toyman saved the day and let her choose another prize (I think she left with two balls and the Jared Allen Mini helmet), took all of us on that little move. I truly haven’t seen anyone as happy as Zoe was on Sunday – I think dad was okay also. Anyway we all had fun and I don’t think we could have had a better winner.

Remember – we’ll be meeting for the game this Sunday – 5:20 PM start time. See you all at Endless Food and Fun Sunday.

All,

I wanted to drop a line tonight - a formal newsletter will go out next week.

I'm sure nobody expected our team to start the way we did - I know I didn't.  I want to encourage all of you to keep the faith and I know none of you want to be the one that missed the start of our winning trend or a record setting day by Adrian.  But, to be open and honest - I want to encourage you to continue to support our club and Endless Food and Fun.  Generally we're not a club of front runners and it's this exact time we need to pull together and support our team, for our team, for our club and for our partner.

It's up to us to keep our club the best we can and the best way to do that is to come to the games.  It's us showing up and having breakfast and/or lunch that allows us to meet in such a great location.  It's us showing up and supporting the club that allows us to have our dinners and other special events.  Everything we do - starts with us showing up.

So I'm encouraging all of you to show up and support Endless Food & Fun along with our club.  I've been running this club for awhile now and I can tell that EFF has a larger cost basis than the other places we've been meeting at in the past.  I don't want to have an uncomfortable conversation with Andrew of EFF at the end of the season (I haven't heard anything negative from EFF) - I just want everyone to know that for us to keep meeting at the best place in town - it has to work for everyone, including our partner EFF.

I'll see everyone on Sunday,

Skol,

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

I'm pretty sure everyone has noticed we haven’t played our game in the second halves so far this year. I’m not sure I understand why myself, but I do know that the first half of the Detroit game was the best I’ve seen the Vikings play in a couple of years.

Here’s an interesting stat: Detroit’s Matthew Stafford has been sacked five times in three games; three times by Jared Allen and twice by Brian Robison, that’s it. The Vikes D-Line played good – in fact Jared almost singlehandedly won the game for us, clearly he was the standout player in this game. I have to mention the one sack that Brian put on Stafford was perfect; I mean perfect, this group looks good. Which makes me think having Kevin back on the line had to have helped. I didn’t do any research, but, it’s a pretty safe bet Kevin was on the field during the quarterback hits and sacks gobbling up blockers.

The real big news out of the team this week is the announcement that Chris Doleman is going into the Vikings Ring of Honor. Chris will be inducted into the Ring of Honor on October 23, 2011 at halftime of the Green Bay game. It only seems right to talk about the Vikings defensive line tonight; it does bring you back to the great players of the past and Chris is truly one of them. In 1989 the Vikings recorded their team record of 71 sacks in a year – Chris had 21 of them and led the NFL. If any club member (from the Minnesota area) records the Ring of Honor ceremony; let me know, I’d like to see it. For those of you reading this not from California – the NFL doesn’t cover halftime events and we’ll only get traces of the event. I’ll see if the Vikings are going to create a DVD of the event.

53/70 HOF Quest:

Please see my 53/70 HOF Quest attached letter.

Club News:

Hold the faith – our team is good.

Now’s seems like the right time to bring up our Code of Conduct. When our team loses; it’s easier to slip into an emotional spot where you don’t want to go. Remember – we respect this team, the owners, the coaches, the players and even the guy who sweeps the floor of the locker room. We are a club of respect and it’s one of the best places to teach our children how to behave.

These losses are tough on everyone – including us fans, but what makes us different is how we deal with the adversity. If any club member has trouble with their choice of language during a game (for example) – you may want to think about your responsibilities to every other person in the room, they matter also.

Our Code of Conduct is important to us and will be enforced and you don’t want to be known as the person without faith when our team starts winning.

Endless Food and Fun and our club are learning to work together. I think it’s important to know that Andrew and Endless Food and Fun are opening the place early for us – his normal hours start at 11:00 am. He’s learning how our early group is affecting his kitchen staff that supports the rest of his business.

For those of you that didn’t notice; the omelets special changed last week. So; here are the current hours of operation for the food service.

The Omelet special will only be available from 9:00 am to 10:00 am. After 10:00 am if you want an omelet – you need to purchase a buffet wrist band. The omelets will be available, but we’re opening the entire buffet at 10:00 am.

You can eat off the menu at any time – pay attention to specials and timing, not everything may be offered on Sundays.

We’re looking for some help with the club. We have two open board positions and would like to start grooming some nice folks to possibly fill those positions next year. What we’re looking for is a person to help with our website; primarily uploading pictures and preparing behind the scenes stuff. You’d work closely with Rick Conwell in this effort. So if you like computers and want to learn how to make a first class website – this may be for you. I’d also like to find someone to help out at the games, signing people in, selling drawing tickets – that sort of thing. It’s nice to have some additional folks who wouldn’t mind helping – even if you’re not interested in the board position, especially during the Holiday’s.

I’m also looking for some help from each of you. When you sign in on Sundays – let Chris and Kent know how many people came with you. At times it get busy around the sign-in area and we’d like to get an accurate count of how many folks show up and still let the sign-in guys watch the game. Also if you have a guests (or spouse) show up; please let these guys now an additional person showed up.

For those with kids – check the center table area for Toyman. Toyman shows up with his bag of goodies and any child that says “Go Vikes” gets a free toy.

And to celebrate our first victory of the season this Sunday – I’ll bring in an Adrian Peterson autograph this week for our drawings.

See you all at Endless Food and Fun Sunday.

Talk to you soon,

Skol

Hall of Fame Selection Committee,

This year as a club we’re trying to “Catch a Wave of Support” to get Mick Tingelhoff (53) and Jim Marshall (70) voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This is another letter on the merits of Mick and Jim.
My goal of these letters is not to cover all the points that Mick Tingelhoff and Jim Marshall bring forth when you consider a person for the Hall of Fame. My idea is to limit myself to one topic and cover that topic in as clear a way possible and then approach you again with a separate topic.

Today I want to discuss “The Wrong Way Run”.

It’s my impression that Jim Marshall’s wrong way run has worked against him when it comes to being selected into the Hall of Fame. It’s not my intention to criticize or accuse any member of the selection committee of being consciously unjust in their selection process. I just believe that this play is in the minds of all knowledgeable football people and is a reality – so I want to bring it out into the open and discuss it for a few minutes.

The game was in 1964; the Vikings were playing the 49ers and George Mira (quarterback for the 49ers) threw a pass to Billy Kilmer (playing halfback at the time) that was completed for about a sixteen yard gain. Karl Kassulke, Vikings safety, created a fumble and here is where it gets interesting. Jim picks up the fumble and runs the wrong way, approximately 65 yards the wrong way and throws the ball in the stands when he crosses the end zone line, and scores a safety for the 49ers. And since that day, October 25th, 1964, Jim has had to deal with the wrong way run question, the wrong way video clip and I think being slighted from the Hall of Fame.

My first point is: Jim was the defensive end putting pressure on Mira that created the scramble prior to the pass. Jim plays right defensive end; forced the 49ers quarterback to scramble to his right, away from Jim. Mira found Kilmer on the right side of the field – his right. My first thought is (with the exception of Jim being twisted around and his run) this play does describe how Jim played. Here is a defensive end forcing the quarterback to scramble, seeing the pass completed for a sixteen to twenty yard completion and was still able to get across and down the field to get in on the tackle and forced fumble. I’m not sure you can find another play where a defensive end covered as much ground as quickly as Jim did on that play.

This brings me to the real point – aggression. Jim’s motto was “Be aggressive! If you’re going to make a mistake; do it aggressively”. This is the style of defense the Minnesota Vikings played. This was confirmed to me by Alan Page personally – everything about this defense revolved around aggression and Jim was the captain of the defense and the team leader, the aggression play started with Jim. So; the next time you watch this play on You Tube, look to see who’s rushing the passer, look to see who’s chasing down the play from behind (and getting there while the play is live) and see if you can spot the most aggressive player on the field – it will be Jim.

If the wrong way part of this play is what you remember of Jim, then you don’t remember the true Jim Marshall. There are hundreds of examples, but, I’ll give you one to help with the image of Jim’s play. A play that Alan Page described as possibly the greatest play he was ever involved in because of the greatness of Jim’s play.

It’s snowing, it’s muddy, there’s poor visibility – Jim drops back into coverage and intercepts a pass and heads for the end zone. Two would be tacklers have the angle on Jim and are closing fast. Somehow through the snow Jim sees a trailing runner about three yards behind the tacklers. Jim waits until the tacklers are just about ready to hit him and he reaches around and under them and laterals to the runner. Alan Page, the trailing teammate, catches the lateral and trots into the end zone untouched. This play is hard to describe; the Vikings are wearing their white uniforms, but you can’t tell because of all the mud. You can’t see very far because of the snow and somehow Jim was able to see he had a teammate to his left and behind him and he made the perfect lateral. To quote Alan “All I had to do was catch it; the ball was exactly where you wanted it.” This was a great play!

There are literally hundreds of examples of Jim’s aggressive play (and probably thousands of examples) where Jim’s play was outstanding. And every time; you find at its core the motto, “Be aggressive! If you’re going to make a mistake; do it aggressively”.

Okay Jim got turned around chasing Mira out of the pocket and running down Kilmer; he was the guy putting the pressure on the quarterback, he was the guy running down the receiver and he made a mistake, but he did it aggressively. He chased a quarterback seven to ten yards deep in the backfield; then ran down the completed pass, only a heck of an athlete can make that play. Oh and yes; the Vikings won that game thanks to a Carl Eller fumble recovery he ran for a touchdown, created by a sack of George Mira by, you guessed it, Jim Marshall. And what was Jim doing on that play – being aggressive!

Let’s put the true NFL Iron Men in the Hall of Fame (and let’s do it aggressively)!

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Well the Chargers game was a game of two halves. Percy opened the season with a bang and the Vikings played well the first half. Adrian was running like we all know he can; the defense started with a three and out and got pressure on Rivers. Yes the first half looked good – the second half, not too much. I think the biggest issue isn’t the tackling, isn’t the blocking, isn’t the passing – I think this team needs to play better as a team; they need to come together as a unit. I don’t believe for one minute that the talent isn’t on this year’s team and I like the coaching staff; don’t expect to see the second half performance again this week.

I’m 100% positive the tackling will be solved and wouldn’t be surprised to see this “fixed” by Sunday. With Coach Frazier and Coach Singletary leading this defense – they will tackle and they will be fast. I think the defensive squad had a disappointing game (with regards to the second half), but this will change. You won’t see three penalties on the final drive again this year – at least not that impact the game as what happened in San Diego.

I’m going back to my first thought and I believe the team wasn’t comfortable as a team. The best teams always come together and in the second half; the Vikes didn’t look comfortable. We have the talent! We have the talent on offense, on defense and on special teams. I didn’t see any troubling spots in the first half of the game. We had long drives on offense and the Chargers had three and outs – our guys will be fine as long as they don’t believe what they read in the papers and trust in themselves. Expect to see a rebound this week.

Club News:

The Chargers game is done and I guess I’d be remiss if I didn’t recap a little. First of all I need to thank Laurie Kjar for her work on the bus trip and tailgate planning efforts. I’m most happy we didn’t leave anyone in San Diego – I’m a simple man, good thing Laurie isn’t as simple. The tailgate party went great and I understand that neither the bus trip nor the tailgate party would have worked without the help of Sharon Ash – so, thanks Sharon.

Let me summarize the tailgate event for you – first we have the visit from Zygi Wilf (and me without a mini helmet for him to sign – did I mention simple). Yes Zygi stopped by to say hello and we had a chance to talk for a few minutes. Of course we thanked him for all he has done for our team and our club – in particular for this year’s camp trip in a pretty hectic year. I also got the opportunity to let him know how much we appreciated the 50 greatest Vikings event last year.

Then we had the visit from the Purple Pimps – the guys in purple suites with horns in their hats, you see them at the games. Everyone who wanted pictures got one – lots of fun.

Then we have Bakersfield Tony. Tony is my true hero for the day and possibly the year. Tony showed up with enough food to feed an army and he literally did. We had at least 30 Navy and Marine color guard members at our tailgate party and Tony fed them all. Every person we saw with a uniform on; Tony brought in and fed them, a few may have had a beverage or two, but you didn’t hear that from me. If you saw the start of the game you saw the flag that covered the field – those are the guys that joined our event.

I talked about the game already so I’d like to contrast the Chargers fans to how our group acted. I was very disappointed in the Chargers fans. I personally saw three fights and had an obnoxious fan sitting behind me. I have a story or two I could tell about the Charger fan behind me, and I will if asked about it at the club.

The point I want to make here is: I’m glad I’m a Vikings fan and not a Chargers fan. I’m very proud of the conduct of our club before the game started and I’m proud of how our club acted during the game. All of you that attended – thank you for being the classy fans that you are.

When I compare the behavior of the Charger fans to Tony (as an example) and our club (stopping everyone in uniform, inviting them in, feeding them) I’m glad I bleed purple. When Charger fans came by our tailgate area they were treated with respect and not one harsh word was spoken – not one. In fact, I heard people complementing the Chargers organization and wished them the best – wanted the Vikings to win, but wished them the best. If you sat in an area where some Charger fans acted like – well California football fans, take heart in knowing you are truly the better person and fan for taking the high road.

I’m so pleased to be a Vikings fan and an SCVC supporter – I really am. Aside: our behavior worked – I didn’t hear of one club member having problems, only observing poor behavior from others.

Because of the Chargers game there will be a shorter than “normal” time to renew your club dues. After the Tampa game I will be changing my email/mailing list to active 2011 members only. If you stop receiving this newsletter, you haven’t renewed your dues. You can mail me your dues, you can pay at any club game gathering or you can pay online. If you have any questions regarding if you’ve paid already – send me an email or give me a call and I’ll get back to you.

See you all for the official opening at Endless Food and Fun Sunday.

Talk to you soon,

Hall of Fame Selection Committee,

This year as a club we’re trying to “Catch a Wave of Support” to get Mick Tingelhoff (53) and Jim Marshall (70) voted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

My goal today is not to cover all the points Mick Tingelhoff and Jim Marshall bring forth when you need to consider a person for the Hall of Fame. My idea is to limit myself to one topic and cover that topic in as clear a way possible. I will address other topics in future correspondences with you – rest assured I will cover credentials, skills, perceived negatives and what each of these gentlemen meant to the Minnesota Vikings.

The word for today is: Durability. When you think of Mick Tingelhoff (number 53) and Jim Marshall (number 70) you have to think of durability first. What these two guys did was truly unbelievable. Mick played for seventeen years and Jim played for twenty. And when I say they played; I don’t mean they showed up and just contributed on certain plays, these two guys set the standard for all the guys on the team and for all the current and future players in the NFL. Mick and Jim’s play was 100% every play.
Let’s look at Jim’s durability record versus Richard Dent’s durability record – Richard Dent went into the HOF this year.

Jim Marshall

Richard Dent

I want to start out saying right now – that I think Dent deserves to be in the Hall, the comparisons I’m making are for example only.

At first glance you quickly notice the Richard started in 53% of games as Jim started. This is basically half as many games. A better way to describe this is: Jim played for two of Richard’s careers. So I decided to check out those “extra” games Jim played – here’s what I found:

In the last five years of Jim’s career; the years Richard wasn’t able to play – Jim played in four Central Division championships, two NFC championship games and one Super Bowl. Richard played for fifteen years and started four games in his final four NFL career playing years. I really don’t care what the reason Richard didn’t play, but I do know that Jim was leading his team to championship after championship along with going to a Super Bowl for five years longer than Hall of Famer Richard Dent played. When I went back and looked at the last four years of Richard’s career and compared them to the twelfth through fifteenth year of Jim’s career – here’s what I found.

When Richard started in four games and played in thirty-six games; Jim started every game in the equivalent time period and led his team to three Central Division Championships, two NFC Championships and two more Super Bowls. This is not only durability; this is durability at the highest quality of play possible. The record shows that Hall of Famer Richard Dent had trouble playing at the same level at the end of his career – while Jim played for basically a second Hall of Fame worthy career and the teams he lead competed at the highest level possible.

Okay Jim was durable, what about Mick. With Mick we didn’t have an offensive lineman going into the Hall of Fame this year so I went and looked at Jim Langer as a comparison. Jim Langer was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1987 and he played center for the Miami Dolphins (same position as Mick) – he was a member with the Miami team that went undefeated and won the Super Bowl.

Here’s the durability numbers for Mick versus Jim.

Mick Tingelhoff

Jim Langer

Games Played

Games Started

Games Played

Games Started

240

240

151

110

So let’s look at the durability factor again – Jim started 45% of the games Mick started. Mick literally played more than two of Jim Langer’s careers. And as you guessed – I looked at the quality of play during those “extra” years. Here’s what I found: In the five “extra” years Mick played; he started every game. Mick led the Vikings to five Central Division Championships, three NFC Championships and two Super Bowls in those five years. It’s hard to imagine how any man could play at a level that accomplished this feat; Mick did just that, Jim Langer was home watching the games on television (viewed from an equivalent time period standpoint).

Again – I do not mean to criticize Jim Langer, only to point out the durability of Mick Tingelhoff.
I also looked at the beginning of Mick’s career and compared that to Mr. Langer’s career. Mick comes into the league and is the starting center for an expansion team – okay one year removed, not the best of situations. Mick comes in and not only starts, but becomes the true cornerstone for the Vikings offense. Mr. Langer comes into the league and doesn’t start a game until his third year into the league. Mick came into the league strong, stayed strong and continued to play strong long after Hall of Famer Jim Langer retires (when you look at years of playing). This is the true test of durability!

I had the opportunity to discuss this attribute with Minnesota Vikings Hall of Fame member Alan Page and his statement to me was “This is an incredible feat for any man”. Alan went on to explain that what Jim and Mick did was practically inhuman – to prepare and play at the level they did for as long as they did; both Mick and Jim deserve to be in the Hall. These are Alan’s thoughts – not mine, I agree with Alan, but these are his opinions.

It’s crystal clear that Mick Tingelhoff and Jim Marshall are the first true and only “Iron Men” of the NFL. Both these men played in the trenches, one on offense and one on defense and both men found a way to do what no other person in NFL history has been able to do – play in the middle of all the hitting week in and week out, without missing a game, without missing a beat, without losing a step and making every person around them a better player, and that’s a topic for another day.

There are two players that have longer consecutive starting streaks than Jim Marshall– Brett Favre and Jeff Feagles. There are three people that have longer consecutive starting streaks than Mick Tingelhoff - Brett Favre, Jeff Feagles and Jim Marshall and only Jim and Mick played in the line, the positions where every play they were hitting or being hit. You have to consider the positions played as well as the streak and when you play in the line – it’s clearly different, it’s clearly more physical, it’s clearly a more amazing starting streak for these two Iron Men than any other on the leader board.

Let’s put the true NFL Iron Men in the Hall of Fame!

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

The team looked good in training camp this year! To start with we had all our quarterbacks in camp and it showed; I’ll get to these folks right after this. I went to camp with my normal excitement – you know, its football season again. But this year I had another mission – I wanted to check out the new coaching staff and what differences it seemed to make. Well I can tell you this; Coach Frazier has surrounded himself with a real good staff and none more impressive than Coach Singletary. I made a point to go and watch the linebackers work when each day started and Coach Singletary has the same intensity with regard to coaching as we all saw he possessed on the field. Do not be surprised if we have Pro Bowl linebackers this year.

As far as the quarterbacks go, all of them were throwing into small windows consistently. It looked to me like Christian’s delivery was slower than the other guys, but his decision making seemed equal and he is an accurate thrower. Joe Webb looked good – he came into camp in great shape. I think we’ll see him on the field more this year with the rule change that the team can dress three quarterbacks and not need to dedicate one as an emergency QB only. My thought is: you could show a wildcat start and if the Vikes see the right defense you bring Joe under center from the wide receiver set or make people think we have a second pass option split wide – he’s an athlete. And having Donavan in camp working with the team – what a change! The intensity looked up, Donavan looked focused - we probably have the sleeper offense this year.

Only unknown is the offensive line – to be honest with you, I still have trouble grading the line. If the lineman dominates someone; okay I can see that, it’s the five guys playing in unison along with the backs that confuses me. Being a great offensive lineman in a great offensive line may be the most complicated unit on the field.

I mentioned a couple of the guys looked in good shape – don’t think the McKinnie conditioning was the normal, there wasn’t an ounce of fat on Jared Allen and that looked like the normal. And did I mention the linebackers or only coach - the defense looked good, the defense looked ready (including Cedric Griffin)!

Club News:

The Chargers game: We have available seating on the bus to the game – please contact me if you want to leave the driving to us. If you want to take the bus please have your money into me by September 1, 2011. The cost is $30.00 a seat. The pick-up and drop off location will be at the shopping center where Lamppost Pizza is located in Irvine (Culver and Walnut / Culver and the 5 Freeway). Look for the bus closer to Lamppost’s end of the parking lot (by Walnut). The meeting time is 7:30 am with a scheduled departure of 8:00 am (let the tailgating begin). If you’ve already committed to going on the bus – time has come to make your payment. We’re hoping we can sell more seats and hopefully find some extra revenue to help with the party a little for bus goers. The better the support the better our event can be, so, go ahead and help the cause and ride the bus.

Tailgating is being worked on – we don’t have all the details at this time, but we’re putting together plans to support a large group. The plan will be to support the bus folks and all the folks who chose to drive themselves. More information will follow.

The tickets are in and will be placed in the mail within the next couple of days – expect to see them next week.

News Break: the club is moving its meeting location for the 2011 season. The new location is:

Endless Food and Fun
7227 Edinger Avenue
Huntington Beach, CA 92647
Phone: 714-377-7671

I went to a lot of places this off season and this place has the best arrangement I’ve seen. The room we’ll be in makes everyplace you’ve ever been in seem subpar. The food is better than Lamppost, more food options and you can either choose an all you can eat buffet or eat off a menu. The pizza, wings and related items you’re used too at Lamppost will cost you less at Endless Food and Fun. It’s actually hard to describe this place – the game room puts Dave and Busters to shame, but works in the same fashion. You purchase game cards (through the club) and turn the game players loose. They have multiple rooms, pool tables, laser tag and more things I can’t remember. The kids won’t get bored while we watch the games. This place has the largest high definition projection screen I’ve ever seen and the owner is willing to work with us – like setting up an omelet bar at the buffet if we bring in enough folks. And this place is less than a year old – everything is new, clean and the best around. Also – parking is great, plenty of room.

So, for those of you from South Orange County (like me) you’ll find the drive is worthwhile. The place is that good. For those of you from the beach cities – you just won the lotto. And for Kent and his merry band from Redlands – this shouldn’t affect you.

Minneapolis Dinner: This event was a blast and I would just like to thank all our honored guests and club members that attended this event. I got to unveil our 53/70 HOF campaign for our guests and Mick Tingelhoff was one of them. Everyone was very supportive of this campaign and we’ll be placing information on our website on how you can help in our efforts. All-in-all it was a good trip, but I’m back and I have to get tickets out and fill a bus.

Talk to you soon,

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Are you ready for some football! Yes – the excitement is back and there has been so much activity that’s it’s tough to stay on top of it all. In fact by the time you read this – more news will have happened. Here’s a quick list of some of the changes and progress the team has made:

Added Players:
     Donavan McNabb
     Remi Ayodele
     Michael Jenkins

Released or Traded Players:
     Sidney Rice
     Ray Edwards
     Madieu Williams
     Tarvaris Jackson
     Jimmy Kennedy

Adding Donavan takes very little thought – he’s the veteran that buy’s us time to get Christian Ponder and Joe Webb up to speed with the NFL style of game (with regards to Christian) and the new offensive system (with regards to Joe). We all know Donavan and what he brings. Remi looks like the long term replacement for big Pat Williams in the middle of the D-Line and a legitimate starter during an anticipated Starcap suspension of the Williams Wall. (I haven’t heard if Pat is coming back to football this year – I believe he wants another year and the Vikes wouldn’t mind having him.) Make no doubt about it – Remi is the real deal, this was a great pick-up for our team. Michael Jenkins adds the big receiver to our team – a real must in the Red Zone.

The loss of Sidney Rice (and more likely – the possible loss of Sidney which turned out to be true) is what got the team looking at Michael Jenkins. Michael brings one really valuable asset along with his size – he knows offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave’s offense, he’s ahead of everyone else on the team in that regard at the moment. I personally liked Sidney and think he can be a great wide receiver in this league – I hope the best for him (I also hope he doesn’t get any more injuries). (I also think the Vikings are twice the team the Seahawks are – I’m not sure this was the best stop for him at this time.) The loss of Ray Edwards has to balance against the retention of Brian Robison. Brian should be a starter in this league and the Vikings had to find a way to get him on the field. The reduction of the salary cap to 120 million (this is lower than the last salary cap year) made decisions harder on retaining all the great players this year.

We’ve signed Kyle Rudolph and a couple of others – expect Christian to sign today.

Club News:

The Chargers game: We still have available seating on the bus to the game – please contact me if you want to leave the driving to us. Everyone signing up will get confirmation information prior to the game. The cost is $30.00 a seat. The pick-up and drop off location will be at the shopping center where Lamppost Pizza is located in Irvine (Culver and Walnut / Culver and the 5 Freeway). Look for the bus closer to Lamppost’s end of the parking lot. The meeting time is 7:30 am with a scheduled departure of 8:00 am (let the tailgating begin). Rudolph and a couple of others – expect Christian to sign today.

With football being back in business and training camp on in Mankato – we have everything set for this year’s visit. We’ll be at training camp Tuesday and Wednesday (August 9th and 10th). These days have full pads practices in the morning and light practices (walk-thru) in the afternoon. (Part of the new agreement – this is the most full pads workouts permitted in one day.) I expect the morning practices to be fantastic, fast paced and a lot happening all at once. This will be the last few days of camp and we should be able to see how far along the team is with the new offensive system. I’m also very interested in watching Coach Singletary with the linebackers and defense; talk about a high-energy person, this will be fun.

The dinner is set with the possible addition of a late confirming guest. As of today we have Stu Voigt, Bill Brown, Dave Osborn, Mick Tingelhoff, Leo Lewis, Walker Lee Ashley and Rickey Young attending as our guests. This is happening on Saturday August 6th at Poor Richard’s Commonhouse (formerly Major’s Sports Café). The location is in Bloomington and if anyone wants to attend either of these events you have to decide now – I travel on Friday to Minnesota.

I’m in the final stages of securing a new club location for the upcoming season – more information will follow as I get everything finalized.

The above logo represents a new addition to the newsletter I will be implementing this season. As a club we are supporting getting Mick Tingelhoff (53) and Jim Marshall (70) into the Hall of Fame. I will either be making a separate letter or a sub-section of this newsletter or both and sending it to all the Hall of Fame voters we have email addresses for; approximately 85% of them. Our plan is to get in-front of the voters 6 to 10 times this year explaining our position on why these two gentlemen deserve being inducted into the hall of fame. As a club we are trying to “Catch a Wave of Support” in our quest. Expect to hear more on this topic as we get into the season.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Since my last letter there really hasn’t been a lot of “hard fact” news. It seems the 2011 season is closer to happening and everyone involved in the negotiations have gotten past the standstill and are at the table talking. I’m still optimistic that training camp will happen, that the season will happen and football will again own the sports fans of America.

I’ve started to hear the talking heads in media predicting a date the bargaining agreement is reached – the basis for my optimism today. Most of the logic seems to be centered on the Hall of Fame game and basically backing up from that time. The thought being the Bears and Ram’s are the first preseason game and would need two weeks of training camp prior to this game, some time to prepare their respected teams (let’s say 1 -2 weeks of free agency) thus creating the date they believe the deal will be completed. My estimate is this week or next – if longer, there could be a downhill slide. This is too great a sport (and business) not to happen - everyone involved in the negotiations understands this fact.

Now that we’re closer to the end and I understand the rationale for the logic – the Vikings date of July 18th makes more sense to me. Not only does this leave the U of M, Mankato enough time to prepare for the upcoming year; it makes sense from a big picture NFL logic stand point. (Remember the Vikings announced they’d let U of M, Mankato know by the 18th of July if they would be holding training camp in Mankato.)

There hasn’t been any stadium talk for a while. For those of you not following Minnesota politics (and I don’t really – if not for the Stadium issue I wouldn’t be watching) – the Minnesota government is shut down. Not the best situation for our team and a stadium deal. This walks us into a political conversation and I won’t go there – every political view loves football and the club will not choose a side. You’re on your own to form your opinions – my opinion is: I want the Vikings to stay in Minnesota, period!

Shout Out:

I would like to take this moment to thank every current and past armed service man or woman that has help keep me and my family safe as well as every other American. I would like to honor the families and armed service men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country – my heart goes out to all of you today and every day. God Bless.

In my family we have three active participants in today’s service, so, Derik, Jeremy and Jeff – thanks.

Club News:

The Chargers game: We still have available seating on the bus to the game – please contact me if you want to leave the driving to us. Everyone singing up will get confirmation information prior to the game. The cost is $30.00 a seat.

Again – we have 160 club members attending this game, thanks to all of you for supporting our team. I’m not expecting to receive the tickets from the Chargers until the end of July – early August time frame. Just like all of us; they’re waiting for definitive understanding of the season before issuing tickets.

Training camp plans: I’m taking names now for training camp. Please send me an email or phone call if you want to attend this event.

I have confirmation from the Minnesota Vikings that the training camp event and rules will be the same as last year. What that means is: all club members will get on field passes for camp, VIP autograph privileges for one autograph that is available that day and a guaranteed great time.

I’m planning on being at training camp Monday and Tuesday August 8th and 9th or Tuesday and Wednesday the 9th and 10th. As soon as the Vikings know their situation and announce their schedule – the club will announce the final dates we’ll attend. We need to make sure we maximize the experience for the members. By this I mean: we’ll be attending two-a-days - practice in the morning and afternoon. If the Vikings announce a squad scrimmage or something special – we’ll shift to that event.

Detailed information will be sent to all that sign-up with times and meeting places as well as everyone will be given my cell number for emergencies.

Tribute Dinner: Planning for this event is in high gear. Dinner guests are being arranged at this time – more information will follow on the guests list as it becomes confirmed.

The date is Saturday August 6th and the time is 6:00 PM for cocktails and dinner at 7:00 PM. Location is Major’s Sports Café in Bloomington. No advance money is required for this event – Major’s creates a club menu ranging from burgers to steaks or salads to swordfish – you choose what you want. This event is reasonably priced so everyone should be able to treat their family to a fun Viking event. Please send me an email or phone call if you want to attend this event – I’ll get you on the list.

To give you all a heads up - I’m working with a couple of locations to move our meeting place again. I want to apologize if all this seems confusing or concerning. What I’m trying to establish is truly a private room for our club. Last year we didn’t achieve the environment that I wanted, we reacted to a situation. (By the way our old place, Northwood, is under construction to become the Spicy Crab.) Last year we found out the new owner had plans that didn’t fit with our clubs requirements – so we did the best we could. Lamppost also wants to continue its sports bar approach to NFL Sundays. I don’t have an issue with businesses doing what they believe is best – I just don’t think it’s the best fit for our club. This year we want to get back to Viking club only – we’ll see if I can get this done.

The one fallout I see with this plan is – the club may not be meeting as a group for the Chargers game. I and every member of the board are attending the game (as are a lot of you). I’ll keep you all informed as this progresses.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

The Vikings announced the date training camp will start – August 1st being the first day of camp with the players arriving on July 31st. The Vikings also announced that July 18th will be the last day to inform Minnesota State University, Mankato of their final contingency plans. The last known piece of information we have, regarding training camp, is the Vikings first game is Saturday August 13th in Tennessee.

So what does this mean? Training camp does depend on the owners and the NFL players association reaching an agreement. (I’m not sure the best way to communicate the name of the players association now that they've legally decertified. So, I’ll continue to use NFLPA because it seems to be what everyone understands.) The two sides have been talking, but, both sides are keeping all the talks private. So I don’t have any real news on how this is going. I’m viewing this as good news – neither side is going to the media trying to blame the other side or garner support. I think both sides realize that they represent the parties affected the most if an agreement isn’t reached. I also think both parties realize that their respected attorneys do profit without an agreement – the NFLPA and the owners have had meetings without the attorneys in the room along with court appointed meetings and legally represented meetings. This seems like two groups that want to make sure a deal gets done and I for one am optimistic (as you’ll see in the club news section).

Stadium talk continues on two fronts – first I’ll discuss the dome a little. The roof repair appears to be on track and everyone making public announcements is saying the raising of the roof on August 1st will happen. I’m not sure at this point in time we would hear anything different – no matter what was happening. I think the Vikings were smart in requesting the first two pre-season games on the road. We are now hearing that the turf will have to be replaced due to the snow, rain and construction equipment damage since the roof came down. This could turn into an albatross quickly.

The new stadium plans seem to hit a new roadblock every week. This is beginning to feel more like everyone wanting to profit – rather than solving a stadium deal. Example: I read somewhere that the Startribune ran an article stating issues with a Ramsey County stadium and thought a new stadium on the old Metrodome site was better. As it turns out the Startribune owns the land around the dome and stands to make money if a stadium is built in that location. (Disclaimer: I’m not fact checking the stories I read – maybe what I read was just as biased.) Anyway – this leads me to believe I’m glad I don’t have a job with the Vikings this year. I have enough trouble obeying our own club conduct rules following the stadium issues – maintaining a public image throughout this political process may be more than I could stand. The team is doing a good job with this issue and I think they will get a deal done – what they get may be as big a compromise as the dome was, let’s hope not.

Club News:

The Chargers game: the Southern California Viking Club will be well represented at this game. We have 160 people attending this game. If you’re going to this game you will be sitting next to club members – wear purple and be prepared to cheer, this should feel like a home game. Tickets will be mailed out after I receive them. It’s not expected for a while – the Chargers are waiting to find out the results of the NFLPA/owners deal first. They don’t want to add confusion too early in the process. You will be hearing more from me on this topic as it becomes available. (Don’t be surprised if you don’t get your tickets until August.)

Our next bit of business regarding the Chargers game is arranging the bus. I want to start collecting money now through July 4th for bus reservations. The cost is $30.00 per person and the pickup and drop off place will be Lamppost Pizza in Irvine. Meeting time is 7:30 am with a departure scheduled for 8:00 am. We’re thinking this will leave two hours minimum for tail gaiting no matter what traffic is like. This is a great way to save the expense of parking and not having to worry if you have a couple of beers at the game – just leave the driving to us. I don’t expect this to get out of hand – the environment will be the same as going to the club, kid friendly. If you’re sure you want to ride the bus – please reserve your spot early. This helps us with our planning and ensures your spot – thanks in advance for your support.

Training camp plans: I’m planning on being at training camp Monday and Tuesday August 8th and 9th, but may change to Tuesday and Wednesday the 9th and 10th. I’m expecting the Vikings to break camp on Thursday the 11th and travel to Tennessee on Friday. I’m planning on the Viking Tribute dinner for Thursday August 11th - with the doors opening at 6:00 pm and dinner at 7:00 pm. And depending on the Vikings travel plans; a Winter Park tour on Friday. This event is the “iffy” event due to the Viking’s travel plans. If the Vikings leave late on Friday we’ll have to work something else out. Because this is a weird year for planning I understand all your concerns; these plans are here so you can better understand the club activities, if you’re planning on attending one of our events this summer. If the owners and NFLPA don’t get a deal done in time for the Vikings to have a public camp in Mankato – our decisions are easy, the one thing I will have anyway is the Tribute dinner. Once I get the room reserved – this dinner will happen! So; for all you club members that enjoy these dinners – I will be in Minnesota and will have this event (even if I take the Viking alumni out to dinner by myself.)

The last piece of club business I want to start is our dues campaign for 2011. I want to start this now and hopefully have this concluded prior to the start of the season. I will be attending the Chargers game which will push our official first club game (where I’ll be there to collect dues money) to September 18th the Tampa Bay game. The club will meet at Lamppost for the Chargers game; we just won’t be signing in and having our usual presence. The dues are $20.00 for the 2011 season. If you have any question if you’ve already paid your 2011 dues – please give me an email. And for those of you that have already sent in your dues – I thank you for your club support.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

It’s time to review the draft a little. I’m sure all of you have heard we drafted Christian Ponder with the 12th pick. Some people are saying it was a reach at the 12th pick, some people are saying there was better value at other positions when we drafted; don’t believe it.

Here’s what I think. First of all – quarterback was the biggest need for the Vikings; I’m saying this even though I really like Joe Webb. It’s possible the Vikings were trying to trade down a couple of spots to get more draft picks and still get Christian – this I don’t know. What I do know is: Christian Ponder is a real good quarterback and is probably the closest to a pro style quarterback there was in this year’s draft. For me personally – I was surprised Cam Newton was chosen number one – I feel better having Christian than I would have, had we gotten Cam Newton. And I’m not just saying this now – I’ve been telling folks I really didn’t understand the Cam Newton story line for some time now (I actually think Joe Webb is ahead of Cam in a lot of ways).

So here’s what I’ve found out about Christian – he comes from a pro style offense at Florida State. He looks off the defense with his eyes, has good pocket awareness and throws into tight windows with accuracy. I truly believe when you wrap him around the supporting cast that the Vikings have – he’ll be the talk of the draft class (with regards to quarterback) next season. I think we did well – time will tell.

The Vikes showed they approached this draft with the same style as in previous years – the change to Leslie didn’t impact their strategy. My example to this is our second round pick; Kyle Rudolph, tight end. Kyle was clearly the best person on the board when the Vikings picked. My feeling here is the Vikings actually got second, first round pick. Kyle’s value will be sky high in 2012 – I think Visanthe’s and Jimmy’s deals end in 2012. Kyle’s addition, when paired with Visanthe opens up a lot of options for the Vikes. Typically when you see two tight ends in the game you’re thinking run the ball – with Kyle’s size and hands along with Visanthe’s size and hands, this becomes a throwing opportunity. When you can convince a defense that you’re willing to throw out of running sets it puts added stress on the defense. When you add stress to the defense; Adrian breaks his big gainers. This was an excellent pick.

We then chose a defensive tackle, Christian Ballard and a cornerback, Brandon Burton. Both of these guys were good picks, but I want to talk about our pick after that – Demarcus Love, O-Line. Demarcus was a sixth round pick and I’m thinking he may be our best gauge for this year’s draft. Don’t expect to see him play next season; unless injuries put him in the lineup. I’m thinking he could become an asset at backup and possibly a starting guard some day. If he develops he could play at right tackle or right guard.

Aside: Unless we get an offensive lineman when free agency opens – expect the Vikes to target a high draft choice next year for the O-line. I’d like to find the next Randall McDaniel (although Hutch is close – real close). Steve Hutchinson should have won our offensive player of the year award – more than once, anyway I can’t help lobbing for the guy I voted for.
All in all I think we had a good draft and our team got better. I also think our division got better, the Packers and Lions in particular. We’ll be playing in the toughest division again this year and I wouldn’t be surprised if the Super Bowl champs come from the Norse again next year.

Club News:

The Chargers game: I’ve been in contact with the Chargers and we’ll be attending this game. I don’t have much information at this time except the Charger’s will be selling group tickets and we’ll be participating when it’s released. I expect we’ll know in the next two weeks what the plan or plans will be. Things you can expect:

 We open the season at San Diego.

 The Chargers won’t know what’s going on with the bargaining agreement and the season could be altered. This could affect our plans also.

 All the risks/contingencies will be defined when we start purchasing tickets.

 All this will be happening through email because of the timing of the game – season opener.

 And because I believe the season will be played in its entirety, without any interruptions; I’ll be in Mankato for training camp around the time everyone gets football fever. I’m also afraid by the time pre-season starts it will be too late to purchase group tickets. I’m expecting our window to be relatively short, so please pay attention to my upcoming emails - if you want to go to this game with us.

Now was that a cheap shot at entering the training camp visit topic.

Yes – the club will be attending training camp and there will be a training camp. If you want to participate in this event - plan on the first or second week in August for camp. Yes this could be altered and yes we can’t put firm dates on this until all the details are worked out, but, I have a hard time thinking football won’t happen on time. But if things do change; you’ll hear about it from me and the press.

For this event I’m planning on two days at camp in Mankato, a tour of Winter Park and a Minneapolis dinner. If we get enough people interested in touring the Dome; we’ll add this event. I know I mention this every year, but, everyone should experience training camp at least once. I remember coming back last year and telling you that Adrian solved his fumbling issue – this was observed at camp, it was proven true by the season’s end. It absolutely amazes me what we see and learn at camp – we attend the last week of camp when there’s real time hitting. Last year we saw E.J. tackle Adrian in the backfield and I was at a loss for words on how E.J. could come back from his leg injury and move as fast as he was. He’ll be fun to watch again this year.

Also – a little perk, the Minneapolis dinner is my favorite event of the year. Imagine our last dinner with 20 – 30 club members attending the event. You get to spend more time meeting the players and the setting is more intimate, or better said, less hectic.

Anyway – expect to hear more as I find out more.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

The primary team news is basically NFL news – the collective bargaining agreement situation. It looks like nothing is going to happen for a couple of weeks or until we get past the first court hearing. My position is this: there’s too much money at stake for everyone concerned not to have an agreement done in time for training camp and we have a season this fall. Both sides have issues and both sides will probably get something they want and something they don’t. The standard philosophy is: when nobody is happy; it’s probably a fair deal. So I expect the lawyers to stay involved until no one is happy and then the deal will get done. Anyway – that’s the position the club is taking and we’re expecting to be at training camp in August.

I also have to mention the draft; one of the off season’s biggest events (which is not affected by the CBA situation). I think everyone believes in some fashion the Vikings will be taking a quarterback. This position is probably amplified by not having free agency prior to the draft. For all teams (not just the Vikings) not being able to build on your team before the draft changes the draft approach. Typically a team can try and fill some holes and position themselves for "what needs" our remaining or "who is the highest ranked player" on their board. This year the draft will be happening first; putting every team in a different thought process.

So I think all of you have as good a guess as me, but, that never stopped me from voicing my opinion in the past so, here are some random thoughts I have. First thought: The draft is filled with good defensive ends this year and the Vikings take a great DE at the 12th pick. Second thought: The Vikings get a break and a quarterback that they thought was going to be gone by the 12th pick is still there and we draft a quarterback with the 12th pick. My final thought is: the Vikings believe they can get a good DE in the second round and trade out of the 12th pick for a later first round pick. They draft a quarterback with this late round first pick. Hopefully they regained their third round pick with this move and get an offensive lineman or defensive back with this pick. Whatever happens – the draft is always interesting and I’ll be paying attention.

And finally it looks like a stadium deal is taking shape and the good folks of Minnesota want to keep the greatest sporting team in history in Minnesota. I am truly excited about this progress and hope for this issue to be solved quickly. Please stay involved with this as members – of everything happening, this is still the most important. We have to keep this team – period.

Club News:

I’ll discuss the dinner after I give you some facts about our season:

We were able to support our four primary charities again this year. Those charities are: South High School; Keyboarding Club, Boys to Men Circle at St. Louis Park High School, the Page Education Foundation and The Link.

As a club or mission is to support charities that support children and/or education and there must be a Minnesota Viking tie to the charity. The Keyboarding Club is run by Brent McClanahan, the Boys to Men Circle is run by Oscar Reed, the Page Education Foundation is run by Diane and Alan Page and the Link was originally founded by Jim Marshall and Oscar Reed. In talking with Oscar I’m absolutely sure that "kids" from the Boys to Men Circle have gone on to be participants with the Page Education Foundation and I think there is a strong chance that "kids" have gone through The Link’s program to Oscars program and finally to the Pages Foundation. A really wonderful connection exists with these groups.

With all that said; if I can grow our membership, I already have identified other charities that fit our criteria and I would love to help. It’s a real good feeling when I write the checks for our charities and this year I wrote $2000.00 worth of checks (hopefully next year will be more).

Dinner Summary: We had a great time (I’m not sure I need to say anymore). We had the dinner at a different venue this year and it seemed to work out good. I learned some things to improve on for the next one, but, we’re talking about little details now. There are a few folks that need to be mentioned – key contributors in making this event work. And to be fair I can only list them in alphabetical order, but, everyone has my thanks and admiration for all their hard work. So here’s the list: Sue Adams, Rick Conwell, Hugh Fryling, Kent Peterson and Phil Pusateri with additional thanks to Chris Harpole and Larry Prieto who were not able to attend this year’s dinner (illness and family commitments). All these folks had a hand in making this event a success. The last person that really deserves my thanks is my wife Chris – without her support I could not have done any of this; club or dinner.

There is one story, from the dinner, I will share with you. As you all know, we use this event as a way to raise funds for our supported charities. One of our fund raising ways is to have a silent auction and it’s this silent auction that is at the center of my story. Keep this in mind as I start my story. This year (as always) we had Viking greats attend our dinner - as honored guests. This year we were lucky enough to get the great Viking wide receiver and special teams captain Chris Walsh. Now Chris may have been the biggest hitter we ever had (as a wide receiver) and according to Stu Voigt; the only other person ever to play special teams as well as Chris was Joey Browner, we are talking about hallowed ground now. We are talking about a true Viking Legend (who wants to come back to more of our events in the future, by the way). Anyway; during the autograph session Chris got up a couple of times and excused himself to go to the restroom. Well, what Chris was doing was bidding on the Fran Tarkenton autographed football. (Now this was a first for me – we had one Viking legend bidding on another Viking legend’s autographed item.) I had the chance to talk with Chris about this and he explained that Fran was his all-time favorite player and always wanted an opportunity to get Fran’s autographed. Anyway – Chris did leave with the football, he did support our charities and I learned that I wasn’t the biggest Viking fan at the dinner – it was actually one of our Viking legends, Chris Walsh. (Aside: I shared this story with Fran already and he got a real kick out of the story also.)

So if you missed our dinner and missed hearing our guests speak and missed getting to meet them – you now have a dinner story to share with your friends and family.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Minnesota Vikings Tribute Dinner:

Hello all; today we start the dinner campaign.  For you members that haven’t been to a dinner below are my outline plans of the evening followed by all the particulars.  I just want to say – every club member should attend this event if at all possible.  This is truly one of our best events as a club.

To start with it gives me great pleasure to announce that at this year’s event we induct our first member into our clubs Lifetime Achievement Award.  This is the highest honor our club can bestow on an individual and is our first member to obtain this award.  He is one of the Minnesota Vikings 50 Greatest Players, our emcee at our dinners a great Viking player, a great club member and a great friend – Mr. Stu Voigt.

Stu was drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 1970 as a tight end out of Wisconsin.  Stu played with the Vikings for eleven years and was a fixture at tight end during that time.  Stu really set the standard at tight end for the Minnesota Vikings and even today; players are trying to match that standard.  Stu played on three Conference Championship teams and three Super Bowl teams with the Minnesota Vikings.  During Stu’s playing days he played on nine Central Division champion teams.  This was truly the decade of Viking dominance.  I could go on and on; but you’ll have to come to the dinner for the rest of the story.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Well our season is over and we already get good news – Leslie Frazier is our new head coach. Congratulations to Coach Frazier; we already know he bleeds purple and is a heck-of-a-coach. Leslie is well respected by the players, has two Super Bowl rings, one as a player and one as a coach. He has championship experience and I’m sure everyone in the Vikings office is pleased with Leslie as our team leader.

This stops all concerns of a "new" program and a rebuilding of a team in the coaches image. Our team program is basically set and this should be especially true on defense. Leslie took our defense from a mid twenty ranking into a top ten defense for three years running. This year our defense was ranked better than the Eagles, Ravens and Bears – not too shabby. Our core of coaches is in place which means our draft team is already assembled – another piece of good news. We will have some changes on offense with Coach Bieniemy going to Colorado and some changes on defense as we fill the void created with Leslie’s promotion, but, nothing that doesn’t happen anyway in the NFL.

I also have to spend a few minutes on Brett Favre. A handful of years ago I wouldn’t find myself saying this, but I’m glad I got to watch Brett playing in purple. I think he’s the last quarterback we’ll ever see playing for as many years and that consecutive streak will never be broken. I think it will be a miracle if someone passes for more yards, more touchdowns and every other record he holds. Brett was a very special player and seeing how he wore our purple; I think I can respect that more today. Brett, congratulations on your football career – be happy with the rest of your life, you have nothing to regret regarding your football years. Best wishes.

I also have to say Joe Webb really looked good to me. Don’t be surprised if the Vikings get a senior guy to compete for the starting position. If you read this in the paper this summer, or you don’t understand the Vikings draft choices – what’s really happening is the team is looking for a number two quarterback behind Joe. Joe showed composure in the pocket and looked pretty solid back there. Now, I know he threw an interception and missed a touchdown throw – I guess what I’m saying is: the Vikings have a legitimate quarterback on their roster today.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the season didn’t go as anyone wanted or expected. I watched every game and I still say our team was better than their record. This is football and no excuses allowed – we will get them next year. I also have to say I’m not surprised that two Norse division teams are in the playoffs. I’m also happy we play in one of the toughest division in the game; a division where real men play, no losing record gets you in the playoffs in the Norse. And next year won’t get any easier - now that the Lions have learned to win Oh, I can’t wait!

And finally our draft position is set – we draft twelfth. So for those of you that like to think, scheme or plan – you know where we draft.

Club News:

Dinner talk continues. I actually have a request for you. I need to know who would come to a dinner either the last Saturday in February or the first Saturday in March with a cost of approximately $50.00 a ticket. At least these are my targeted dates at the moment. If you could send me an email with how many tickets you would want (or call and leave a message for you regular mail folks). The reason I need to know is I’ll be changing the location to a smaller place and I need to know how many to expect. I also have to worry about minimum charges for the dinner and our revenues are down from last year. So I can’t afford to make a mistake with this dinner our year – it would impact what we’re able to do next year as a club if I do screw up.

So for you new folks that haven’t attended one of our dinners here’s what we typically do. First of all we fly alumni players and current players (if we get real lucky) out to join us for this event. Along with getting a top notch meal you get to hear all our guests as they address the group. Generally sharing an inside story about being a Viking player or maybe a humorous event that happened. Rest assured you’ll leave knowing some Viking trivia facts from some of the greatest players of all time. Or maybe we’ll here from one of our charities – remember all the charities we support have a Viking connection.

Then the part none of our members enjoy, but our guests insist, the autograph session. Yes folks – all kidding aside, our guests will sign autographs for you while you meet them. We put some order to this so everyone gets a chance – we think it’s relatively organized anyway. We do put a limit on this – three items per guest for each person attending the dinner. This is a feature that keeps everything moving as well as preventing any bad behavior from sports profiteers who may get wind of what we do for our club members.

And finally we have silent auction items from other great Vikings that weren’t able to attend. This is another way you can get that special gift you’ve been wanting and didn’t get for Christmas. So this was the abridged story of what we do – hope it was helpful for those that never attended.

And the last thing I would like to say at the close of this letter is: thank you all for supporting our club in this poor economy, when our team struggled and the scheduling gods put almost every game on national TV. And when you think of all the Thursday, Monday and Tuesday games were during rush hour traffic in LA – it’s truly impressive that you loyal fans show up to enjoy the game together. It means a lot to me that we were able to accomplish all that we did as a club this year; considering the entire picture – thank you again.

Best wishes to you and your family.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Well it’s Christmas and I’m finding time to discuss our team – I have a great holiday schedule and holiday in general, (unlike some of you with hectic schedules and travel plans). So hopefully my Christmas cheer can give you a quiet moment to yourselves while reading this.

Jared Allen has come to life of late with 9 ˝ sacks so far and truthfully speaking I think there’s only been a half dozen players in the league that have actually played equal to or better than Jared (on defense). I’m saying this looking at total game – tackles, effort, big picture stuff; not just sacks. Jared has two games to play to increase his standings – although Vick is tomorrow you might think this will be a large test for our D-Line, well Michael Vick has been sacked more than Brett Favre this season. Vick is getting a lot of attention this year; but he also is getting hit a lot this year. We’ll get to Vick – he may run and do the things he does, but we should be able to hit him a few times.

As far as the nine losses goes; I think it comes down to turnovers. I know everyone of you would like to see perfect special teams tackling, perfect offensive runs, blocks and passes; as well as perfect defensive stops. As much as the lack of perfection hurts when you’re having a losing season – the turnover ratio is what has hurt us the most. As a team we are last in the league in this area – a team with a different quality defense would not have the wins we have with this dubious honor. Keep an eye on the turnover ratio in the last two games – we win this battle, we win the games.

Which brings me to Adrian Peterson – who has zero fumbles this year, (although he did say it was his problem one of the handoffs got fumbled). Adrian showed in training camp he wasn’t going to put the ball on the ground and he hasn’t. The fact that he wanted to be accountable for one fumble is another reason I think he’s still the best back in the league. (If you think the other backs in the league haven’t muffed a handoff that was accounted to the quarterback of their team – you would be wrong.) He’s eighth in the league so far in rushing and that’s after missing a couple of games and playing on a team that’s been behind most of the time and needed to play catch-up. Had our team scored early and often (as in last year) he would be first or second; even with the missing games.

So what does this really bring me to: I guess I’m really surprised by this year, I didn’t think our team was going to be one of the teams to drop from the top. I watch enough of this game to know every year teams go from the bottom of their division to the top and teams go from the top to the middle or the bottom. I’m just surprised it happened to our team this year. Without digging into the numbers – I do believe it comes down to my earlier point, the turnover ratio. But, as I reflected on our team this holiday I came to this conclusion – I would still rather watch two more games of our team, than start the "non-football" season and not be able to watch this team. Even with a losing season – I look forward to watching our team. The football season is the greatest time of the year. I know football continues after they stop playing, but, watching the games is what I look forward to – the rest of the time I pay attention, I don’t look forward to it – I just don’t disconnect.

Club News:

The Helmets for the Holidays winners are: Pete Holmvik, who won the Brett Favre football and Sue Adams, who won the Jim Marshall/Mick Tingelhoff helmet. Congratulations to both of you – I’m sure you’ll enjoy your new found treasures.

I want to have a California dinner discussion with all of you. Right now I’m not sure it’s the right thing to do, but I’m not sure that it’s gone either. I believe the dinner is a valued part of our club’s identity and the risk of losing that identity is important to me and our board. So, here’s the real situation – our income is down 64% from last year. (I’m not going to get into numbers in this letter – I post this newsletter on the website and I don’t want all the details out there.) What I will do is bring detailed information to the remaining games and will discuss our finances (and show the details) with any member who’s interested. As a club we want to stay as open with our membership as possible.

There are a few possible reasons for our revenue decline. My first thought is the economy – a lot of folks were hurt by the economy. I’m sure every one of you knows someone who lost their job for a period of time or still is without work today. And for those of you in this position – we understand your pain and are praying for you, things will get better.

A second reason is our season. Some folks out there have a difficult time sharing loses with a group – especially a group with a code of conduct that’s enforced. There’s also a segment of fans who just participate more when the team is winning. I don’t want to label this group as front-runners. A better description is folks that don’t have the same passion for this game as me (us) – they’re fans who won’t block out time every week to watch a losing team when they have chores to accomplish on the weekend, they have different priorities.

Another reason is direct TV’s NFL package. Every year we lose loyal fans to folks who purchase the NFL package and watch at home. I would do this if I were to move from California (and not to the Minnesota region) and couldn’t find a club like ours – I wouldn’t go without watching our team.

And what I think is the primary reason – the Vikings have been on basic television out here 70% of the time. By default the Vikings became California’s team. (The conspiracy theorists have already been asking the question: Has there been an ulterior reason for all the Vikings play in California this year?).

With that said what I started doing is looking for venues that are smaller and more intimate in nature to try and save the dinner – basically cut costs while staying within our clubs charter, along with looking at ways to increase revenues. I do have one option that I’ll be discussing with the board, but it will have ramifications with other things we do as a club – basically we’d have tradeoffs that could affect next year’s potential revenue. Anyway – at this time I would like to encourage all of you to send me your thoughts. Whatever we do will be a balancing act; I can’t guarantee anything at this time, but at this point we need all the ideas we can. Who knows one of you may have the idea that helps us not only this year, but every year.

Anyway – maybe this wasn’t what you wanted to here on Christmas, but at least it’s honest. Here’s hoping you had a wonderful Christmas and hoping you have a wonderful new year.

Go Vikes and see all of you Sunday.

Best wishes to you and your family,

Personal Note:

For those of you that heard my announcement at the club – this is old news. For those of you who didn’t; I want to apologize for being late with this newsletter. I was traveling and in Minnesota visiting family. I stayed connected with our team and am now back home ready for the rest of the season.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Oh what a few weeks we’ve had. By now every one of you must be adjusted to the team’s coaching change. I use adjusted because I know none of you wanted to see our team struggle and would rather have had a different start to this season and I also know all of you want our team to win out the rest of the season. With that as a starting point I want to discuss this topic: First I want to thank coach Childress for all his hard work and being the leader of our team. You will always be a Viking to me and I hope you the best in your future endeavors (unless they involve playing our team – in which case I hope we kick butt). I also want to congratulate Coach Frazier as our new head coach and leader. I truly feel coach Frazier is the right choice and personally I was surprised he was still one of our coaches this year (I thought someone was going to grab him to be a head coach last year). Coach Frazier – you have my complete confidence as our head coach and I believe I speak for the entire club on this topic.

With all that said it’s important to point out that we didn’t add any additional coaches at this time. This means the responsibilities have been distributed amongst the remaining coaches. To me this means: as of now our coaching staff is working harder (or at least longer) than any other coaching staff in the league (with the possible exception being the Cowboy’s who may be working as hard as our staff). So to coach Dunbar (defensive line), coach Pagac (linebackers and acting defensive coordinator), coach Woods (defensive backs) along with all the other coaches; I thank you for all your efforts and I wish the best to you and our club. I mention this for two reasons – one I want to show my support to our club and two; to remind all of our members that we have a coaching award each year so please consider the big picture when you vote this year.

And finally I want to give my perspective on the Wilf’s ownership team (for what my perspective’s worth). My true feeling on the Wilf’s is – they want to put the best team possible on the field first and foremost. I understand the business and particularly the stadium issue, but, I believe the Wilf’s truly have the best interest of our team at heart with the business component second. So it’s my contention that the changing of the guard was a very hard decision, but was made for the benefit of the team. I say this because I do talk with people inside the Viking’s organization and everyone (and I mean everyone) always said Brad Childress was (and is) the nicest guy you’ll ever meet. So for all you second guessers out there; I believe the changing of the guard was a very emotional and difficult decision and the timing of the change is what it is – (if you happen to be in the we should have changed earlier or in the we should have made the change later, or not at all camp). This is our team and we support our team understanding we don’t know everything leading up to any team decision. So at this time I want to thank Zygi (and his team) for making the decisions that they believe are the best for our team – no matter how difficult those decisions are. It’s my belief that all true fans need understand that this level of decision is never easy and I believe the same level of respect given to a head coach (for coaching his way) is the same respect an ownership team is entitled. I believe the Wilf’s (and Zygi in particular) are doing what they believe is best for our team and for that reason I support the decision and the timing of the decision. (Okay – I also think it’s in our best interest to stay connected to the stadium deal, business is business and we don’t want to rely on any businessman’s ethics to keep our team where it belongs. Stay connected with Minnesota Momentum and show your support of the Minnesota Vikings stadium and keeping the team in Minnesota. No offense Zygi on the business is business comment.)

Now some team observations from your local fan. The loss to Green Bay was out of character for this club and became the straw that created the coaching change. I think everyone understands this so I want to discuss other items. Jared Allen is finding his stride and looking like the Pro Bowl player we all expect from him. I think this resurgence is a real good indicator to the state of this team – which is, "There is no quit in this team". With the last Green Bay game as the only exception – our team has not quit and we are still a force in the playoff picture. We may need to play error free and get help to make the playoffs, but, I guarantee nobody is looking at us as anything but a playoff contender that will fight to the last second to win. The road in front of us is not the preferred one, but, I’m looking forward to the drive and expect to see a champion spirit from our team.

It looks like coach Bieniemy (running backs coach) will be accepting the offensive coordinator position at Colorado. More on this in future letters – as the information becomes available. This is another indication of how well our team is put together; as I said earlier I expected Leslie Frazier to be pulled away because of his talents, well here we go – great coaches get great opportunities. I’m sure coach Bieniemy’s full attention is on our team and will remain on our team while he’s coaching for us – just another example of how good our team really is put together.

Club News:

The Helmets for the Holidays has begun. This year in our drawings we have an authentic helmet signed by Jim Marshall and Mick Tingelhoff and an autographed football by Brett Favre. You must choose which prize you are interested with – these are two separate drawings. The drawings will be held at the Chicago game, December 20th, Monday night game.  You don't need to be present to win.For you club members out of state that want to participate – please send me an email (or phone call if no email) and I’ll send you the form that will allow you to participate. The club will not be responsible for shipping costs or lost or damaged goods. We will work with the winner to ship the item anyway the winner feels comfortable. Note: we haven’t had a problem to date; I just can’t take responsibility for something of this nature. The drawing costs: 1 ticket $5.00, 3 tickets for $10.00, 6 tickets for $15.00 and 9 tickets for $20.00. No other discounts are given - $50.00 would buy you 21 tickets for example. Good luck to all.

For anyone reading this from our website – this drawing (as are all our drawings) is for club members only. If you’re interested in becoming a member, please see that page on our website. We do verify all entries into our drawings.

I want to thank all the club members that participated in our annual can food drive – we had another great year.

Please help support our club by attending this week’s game; it’s only through game day events that we raise money for our charities and related events.

Aside note: The reason I was traveling was for the birth of my third grandchild and second grandson. Caleb Andrew Burkhard came in at 8 lbs 9 oz and was 20.5 inches long. He also came in questioning why Jim Marshall and Mick Tingelhoff aren’t in the Hall of Fame – oh yea he’s a true Vikings fan, looking forward to his first Viking tribute dinner. His favorite numbers are 53 and 70 – I’m sure you know why.

Go Vikes and see all of you Sunday.

Thanks,

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

For team news this week I want to discuss more on the Patriots game than the Cardinals, but, I won’t ignore probably the best game this season.

As tough a loss as the Patriots game was; I actually thought we out played the Pats. I think the offense is really starting to come together and I think the offensive line is starting to play like I expected. The line and the offense actually won their battles – there’s a lot of good here. Adrian was tearing the Pats apart; the holes were there, the line really impressed me. With all this warm fuzzy talk; what went wrong you might ask? I think it was two plays – the long pass for the lead, that the Patriots completed, and the interception that was in and out of Percy’s hands. These two plays changed the momentum and our record added pressure to the defense and I think they made a couple of errors that aren’t Minnesota Vikings football on the final drive. On the last drive I thought the defense went for the strip on the first third down conversion, instead of bringing the ball carrier down. On the second opportunity to stop the drive; we simply missed a tackle. So maybe you can say three or four plays that changed the outcome, but, the two earlier mentioned plays changed the game’s momentum.

On the long pass – I thought it was a good effort by our defense. The corner (Asher Allen) played his man well. Our line got pressure on Brady; we just didn’t hit him or bring him down. Brady and the Pats went into a scramble drill and made a good play that went for a long touchdown against us. The interception brought out the fan in me. I actually thought Percy was down by contact (with ball control) and the defensive player stripped the ball after he was down. (I think this would have been an interception in its day, but not with today’s rules.) There’s a good chance I’m wrong here (it was a bang-bang play), so if anyone wants to dispute this with me, send me an email with what you saw.

I guess what I’m saying is: after this loss I didn’t feel like we were beaten and I certainly wouldn’t fear playing the Pats again this year – in fact I would relish the opportunity. This team is pulling it together.

Okay – the cardinal’s game. There’s really only two points I want to make here. First of all you got the feeling in the fourth quarter that the Vikings team (with a special emphasis on the defense) said "Enough is enough". The defense' (I think) held Arizona to three and out on the final four drives and they clobbered the Cardinal’s on those drive attempts. After that point in time it looked like the Vikes defense was playing a High School team. They took control and evoked a will I haven’t seen in a long time. At this time – this was the best defense in football. Not to be out done the offense won their battles also. First and twenty – no problem, we’ll get this in one try. The offense scored on every opportunity after this point – this was truly the best game I’ve seen in awhile, this was Viking’s football. So the question is: will this be the beginning of our run; I think so, time will tell.

My second point is Greg Camarillo’s play to strip the ball on the interception. I said above it looked like the team said enough is enough in the fourth quarter, but, Greg’s play in the first half was the play of the game. That play will probably be the best play of the season for the Vikes – it’s certainly the best play so far this season. As of now; Greg is my new hero. To never give up; now that’s Viking’s football, great job Greg. This showed me there’s no quit in this team – watch out Chicago, the freight train is coming.

Lastly I want to mention a couple of quick things. The Vikings are accepting votes for the 50 greatest Vikings and the Pro Bowl voting is going on at this time. With regard to the Greatest Vikings I want to lobby for some Vikings that support our club that are great players, but, sometimes go unnoticed (aren’t from headline positions). First of all – everyone should vote for Stu Voigt, he did everything at the tight end position. I also want to mention Gary Larsen and Doug Southerland. Gary is considered the fourth Purple People eater but both of these guys had 10+ sacks in multiple years and made up the fourth man in the legendary Purple People Eaters. Gary has been to two or three dinners and Doug has been to at least one. If anyone forgets Randall McDaniel – you don’t see the same game as me. Dave Osborn, Bill "Boom-Boom" Brown, Rickey Young, Oscar Reed, Brent McClanahan and future Hall of Famers Mick Tingelhoff and Jim Marshal are just a few Viking Greats that routinely help our club. I don’t have time to list them all, but I’m attaching a list of all the Viking greats that have supported our club. I mention this not because I think supporting our club is what determines a great Viking, but rather as a character reference. Everyone mentioned has gone on to support multiple charities and continues to be great people in the community and I think that is the quality of a great player. Personally – I would like to have these great players as my neighbors because they are truly great people.

With regards to Pro Bowl voting – don’t forget about Kluwe. I think he’s the best punter in the league at this time. So don’t forget him or Percy Harvin and Heath Farwell as special team players. I think you can figure out the rest on your own – just wanted to make sure when you vote you don’t only think about offense and defense.

Club News:

Can food drive this week’s game – Chicago. Please help support the Orange County Food Bank by bringing lots of cans or dried food to the game. As is our custom; we’ll have some drawing prize opportunities at the end of the game for the folks that support this effort.

With all the talk involving the Vikings this year I think it’s time I give you my two cents worth here also. Don’t always believe what you hear or read – for example last week it was Childress and Harvin’s dispute over effort on the practice field. After the game we hear there was a dispute, but, not about effort, but rather, Percy not wanting to get an MRI on his ankle. These are emotionally different and one makes better press than the other. Last year we had the fictitious schism and I wouldn’t be surprised to hear the source leaking these stories is a friend of a second cousin to a first wife someone hasn’t seen in years who heard the story from a cab driver in a different state. This is one of the reasons our Code of Conduct states we don’t criticize coaches, front office and related Viking organization personnel. The truth being – we don’t know the truth; only the participants know the truth. We believe the truth is the truth and the people with the truth will act accordingly in support of our team.

I personally think the Wilf’s have been great for this team and I don’t think for a minute that they have anything but the best interest in this team at their core principals. I also believe in this team; so believe what you will, but, do it with a grain of salt. I think a lot of the reporting is close to political ads, there may be a truth in it, but it’s not the complete truth.

Anyway – I’ll get off my soap box now, and encourage all of you to keep the faith and now may be the prime time to join "Minnesota Momentum", the effort to keep the Vikings in Minnesota. It’s when the chips are down that true fans step up and when you talk about true fans; you talk about The Southern California Viking Fan Club.

See all of you Sunday.

Thanks,

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Well - we beat the Cowboys and lost to the Packers in a close heavyweight bout style. The Cowboy victory was much needed and a win against the Packers would have really helped; it just didn’t happen, so here’s what I saw.

In both games we saw an increase in screen passes against our defense. I think we handled the Dallas screens better than the Packers – I expect to see more this week. Against the Cowboys our linebackers and corners were able to slice through the blockers and make the tackles. It looked like the Packers adjusted a little and shored up the point of attack blocking – I’m sure this will be addressed by Sunday; I’m taking the position if I saw something, everyone saw it (or I’m wrong). We’re coming up on our fourth week in a row with a 3–4 defense – I’m sure the Jets, Cowboys and Packers ran the 3-4 (as did the Dolphins); I’m not sure of the Saints and Lions (I think they ran 4-3’s). Anyway – this coming week won’t be a surprise. In a way; grouping similar styles together on the schedule helps out team, we’ve had consecutive weeks of practice against this style of defense. All teams have different twists and personnel, but, seeing the same format four weeks in a row is an advantage over alternating styles each week.

The talk this week revolves around Brad and Brett: With regard to Brad’s comments about "Brett needing to stay within the system" and declaring the officiating was, well "not the best" – here are my thoughts. If you’ve been watching any NFL analysis with a retired quarterback in it – what Brad did was an atrocious and the end is near. To this I say they’re nuts. I agree with their analysis if you’re talking about a young player with a confidence problem; we’re talking about Brett Favre and Brad Childress, neither has a confidence problem. (You may not agree with them all the time, but, you probably don’t disagree with their respected confidence.) This by no means will affect the team. I believe the fact that Brad was fined by the NFL for speaking his frustrations about the officiating is a testament to the emotions of the game. Last year Brett had a similar experience when Brad was considering protecting him by taking him out of the game (not benching, but, admitting he was too valuable to get beat up). That didn’t have an impact on the team and this year’s event wont either. This is primarily media hype – remember the schism last year. So to this – I say let the media have their fun, anything related to this issue will be addressed in the locker room when nobody but the team is present. It will be addressed and it won’t be an issue and we probably won’t hear about it; period.

With regards to Brad’s comments regarding the officiating – I agree with him. I believe he should’ve been fined – based on my understanding of the rules and conditions, he was just plain right. I think the officiating was the deciding factor in the Packers win, and yes, the head officiating review said Visanthe’s catch shouldn’t have been reversed. I understand not changing a call that is incorrect when you don’t have evidence, but, when you don’t have evidence and reverse a call – that’s home field advantage. The advantage the Packer’s received when they scored their TD is another example of how officiating affects the game – timing of plays and breaks to prevent a look at the TD catch. The part that hasn’t been talked about but I think are the most egregious examples involved pass interference penalties. When Randy catches a pass for a TD they call a push off, and that could be pass interference (and probably was according to the rules). To set this up you need to understand how Randy (and all big talented wide receivers) play. Randy slows down when he has position and keeps himself between where the ball is going to be and the defender playing him. He knows he can shield the ball or possibly get a call his way. On this play the official saw his forearm on the player while he separated from the defender and made the call. 90% of the time this is a non-call in the league, but quite possibly the correct call. To me if this is a penalty it has to be consistent for both sides. So let’s assume this is a good call. On Percy Harvin’s TD catch before he caught the ball a defender places two hands on his chest and you can visibly see the arms extend and Percy’s body move, but no flag, a much easier call to make than the one on Randy. All the talk was about how Percy didn’t get the second foot in bounds

(which he didn’t). What probably burned Brad (because it did me) was the non-call prior to the catch. Now I’m saying this and I haven’t reviewed the game at this time – I’m going on emotion (as did our coach), and I could be wrong, but I don’t think I am. It looked to me like the Packer’s got the officiating breaks and we didn’t – I don’t mind fair, I do dislike an advantage given to one team (even if it’s my team).

The last thing probably left to talk about is Brett’s health. From what I’ve read, as bad as his injuries are, he can probably play on the ankle. The way I heard this explained is: if this was the playoffs – most quarterbacks would play. During the season most quarterbacks would sit to get healthy, but, we’re talking about Brett Favre. This guy has played through more pain than I’ve experienced during my life and did it at a Pro-Bowl level. I think he will play on Sunday. I also think the only way he comes out of the game is if our offense can’t protect him and he’s getting pounded. This assumes that he wouldn’t be able to slide around in the pocket and our blocking was not adequate to protect him with the limited mobility. I just don’t think it will limit his mobility to that extent.

Club News:

I need to discuss our Code of Conduct at this time. We sat through a game with three or four fantasy football players that had Aaron Rodgers on their team. I think we all understood that they weren’t cheering for their team, but, trying to get under our skin, as a group we intimidated them. The bad news is we did respond to them and that really set them off. We had club members flip them the bird after a Packer’s score and from that point on we turned these guys loose (and they did get worse after that point). That’s when the really obnoxious part started – I went to talk to them, but it turned out I approached them after we added the fuel to the fire and they weren’t reasonable at that time (they only saw our bad behavior and didn’t believe they were culpable in any way). I’m not saying that we started the issue, but we definitely participated. Look at it this way – we didn’t commit the first personal foul, but, if this was a football game – we would’ve been the player flagged for retaliating.

As a group we can’t be the ones setting bad examples to the children (or anyone for that matter) that attend our games. If someone from outside our group does – we have a much harder time controlling the problem. When we participate in the problem – we make it worse. I’m sorry it happened, but going forward you have to address the issue without using poor behavior yourself. So here’s what I expect you do – when you experience something that you think is out of line with a non club member, talk to the manager at Lamppost (or me, the manager will discuss things with me either way). Bring specific examples of what’s been said or done that has offended you – Lamppost will need specifics, this is where the strength of argument comes from. It’s up to Lamppost to approach their customers (and they will) – they can use the examples of behaviors that are offending to others to ensure its clear, respectful communication. Lamppost will support our club, but, we need to work as partners with Lamppost. I did discuss this with the manager after the game and the owner later in the week – we are in agreement on how to deal with these issues. To set the record straight – Lamppost is just as sorry this happened as I am and they do want to ensure this doesn’t happen again.

We also have to realize that we will be around fans from other teams and we welcome them to cheer for their team – in fact we encourage the behavior, even when they’re cheering for our opponent. We believe that everyone deserves respect – our club included. So please everyone – remember our code of conduct, I know emotions run high (they did for our coach this week also) but, we have to truly value our code of conduct – it’s what makes us, well us.

Aside from our fantasy friends – we have to understand that our team is working hard to win, their goals weren’t to lose. We all need to be respectful of the club members – keep negative comments to yourself, keep the game enjoyable for everyone around you, remember the code. I believe in our team – even though it’s been an emotional ride so far, stay respectful.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

The team came out and got a much needed win against Detroit and a win in our division. This was a critical win because it was within their division. Then we had our bye and traded for Randy Moss. This made for great headlines for a couple of days, but didn’t translate to a win against the Jets. So, let’s discuss this game, the future and what I think for a couple of seconds.

The first half we couldn’t get started at all. Maybe it was the rain, maybe it was this, or maybe it was that; the coaches and players will be working on this (and that). We used two centers in the game (I think we changed at half time, I’ll have to review the game); an indication that the injury to Sully is having an effect on our line. Anyway; it took a good effort by the defense to keep us in the game at half time. We started to see the potential of this offense (with Randy) in the second half of the game. We had to overcome long third down conversions to score – something we didn’t have much success with in prior games. We saw three touchdowns in a quarter and a half and we found a rhythm. I’m not sure on this, but, I believe this is the most scoring in the shortest time against the Jets this year – a real good defense. We started to light these guys up in a close game – these were not throw away points, we could have won. We didn’t win and we have to give the Jets credit, but, we saw the potential.

So here’s what I think. We’re still one of the most talented teams in the league and we’re still a force to be reckoned with. I think the addition of Moss is a difference maker for the Vikes and when Sidney comes back (and he doesn’t need to be rushed now) we’ll have the best receiving unit in the NFL. I think we already saw some additional space for the passing game – all the long third down conversions and 30+ yard touchdown passes. I believe Adrian will see more line fronts with 7 guys in the box instead of his usual 8 or 9. And I’m saying this when he averaged 4.9 yards per carry against the Jets – not an easy thing to do. I think the biggest concern now is turnovers – we have to reduce these, we’re 4 and 0 if we don’t commit the turnovers. I think with Randy on the team – this will go down, a reduction in interceptions. Randy stretches the field and Brett won’t have to force the ball into tight locations (condensed field). Adrian has fixed his fumbling problem (that the world was talking about last year) – this was visible at training camp this year and has carried through to the regular season. I’m not worried at all about the fumbles last week – I believe those we’re weather related, I see them again and I’ll start to worry about the starting of a trend. The next thing is having the O-line play more consistently as a unit. I’ve reviewed the first three games and the line play looked better the second time seeing the game. Too many hits on Brett and too many sacks, but, even saying this we are nowhere near the worst team in O-line play. We are statistically average though and we can improve. My point here is – I think we’re either not playing as a unit or we’re getting ourselves into improper blocking schemes. I know the speed rushers have gotten to Brett; I just don’t think this is any different than any other line. (Aside: I think we just played the best offensive line in the game with the Jets.) And lastly I think we need to start faster – we need to start getting a lead in the first quarter, let our defense play downhill for awhile. Our sack production is down because we’re playing from behind – I believe Randy Moss will help here also, expect the team to start grabbing the lead early going forward.

Okay – one more thing, the dome is going to be crazy this Sunday and Dallas is ripe for the picking. Dallas walks into a bees hive this Sunday – Vikes put together a solid game and come away with a much needed win.

Club News:

I want to thank all the club members that showed up for the Monday night opener at our new home. We didn’t win the game, but, we had a good time. I know how difficult it is to fight the traffic (on a work day) to come and watch the games with us – it’s this kind support that allows us to be the club that we are. This Sunday we play at 1:15 PM and I’d like to see all of you show up for this game. Our game attendance is everything when you look at what we’re trying to accomplish (it’s also more fun in my opinion). It’s through the kind efforts of you and your love of this team and this great game that makes this club so much fun.

For those of you that didn’t make it to our first game at Lamppost – the location is Culver and Walnut in Irvine. We’re close to the 5 freeway and minutes from Northwood (actually easier to get to Lamppost). All the information can be found on our website.

Key club dates:

Sunday 11/14/10 Can Food Drive

Sunday 11/21/10 Helmets for the Holiday Begins

Brett Favre Autographed Football

Jim Marshall & Mick Tingelhoff Autographed Full Size Helmet

Sunday 12/5/10 Announce Dinner Decision

Monday 12/20/10 Helmets for the Holidays Drawing

Sunday 1/2/11 My 20th year anniversary with the club. Okay it’s not important.

Changes related to our move to Lamppost: 1) we’ll now be checking in for every game – not just the morning games. This is being done to get a better understanding on attendance. 2) Lamppost will not be providing coffee at morning games. They gave up on that plan years ago – when your establishment is next door to Seattle’s Best Coffee it just became easier to allow guests to bring in coffee. So stop next door and get the good stuff. As is our club rule and Lamppost’s rule – no food from other establishments allowed. The only exceptions to that rule would be deserts – birthday cake for example, as you would expect.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

This is the newsflash – we need a win and Detroit is lining up to be that victim. Let’s talk about the defense first. The only possible issue here is the first drives of the games – The Vikes started slowly on both games first drives. The defense held the Saints to 14 points and really held the Dolphins to 7 points. (You can’t hold a recovered fumble in the end zone against the Vikings defense.) This group will also be getting stronger very soon with Cedric Griffin and Chris Cook coming back at corner. Expect to see these guys either next Sunday or the Monday night game after the bye week (the second option most likely – this group is doing fine now, might as well make sure the injuries are behind these players).

The offense putting up 19 points in two games really surprised me – even with a slow start I expected 30+ points in two games. The first game looked like rust to me and we would be fine. Yesterday’s game looked like offensive line struggles to me; with the fourth down plays being what sticks in my mind as the best examples. It just looks like we’re not on the same page when it comes to blocking responsibilities. Remember Sully was out the entire pre season and the line was in a constant state of flux at camp and pre-season. I’m thinking, with the fact that this group played together last year; that everything comes together real soon. Adrian had a great day and I think this is testament to how great he really is and he can get 2000 yards if he gets the holes at the line of scrimmage. I also think that Adrian’s day also showed that this line can get the job done – it’s not about talent, it’s about everyone playing together on every play. I just don’t think we were on the same page; at least on the fourth and goal play, it’s possible the blocked fourth down pass was just a great play by the Fins (and that’s how I see it.)

All in all – I still believe we are a serious playoff contender, even if we’re taking a path we didn’t want to take at the start of the season. For all you fans – here’s my predictions for next week. First – we win, we do whatever it takes and we win. Second (and I know this will hurt some of you) – we don’t go for it on fourth down next week. With the emotions of the dome opener yesterday and we didn’t get it done and the fact that with two field goals we would have won yesterday. Next Sunday we kick and let the defense win the game. Don’t expect us to go for fourth down until after the bye and the team corrects its blocking schemes.

So there’s only one thing left to say regarding the first two games – as true Viking fans it’s now our turn to stand up and be counted. Anyone can be a fan when you open up winning; it’s when you open 0 and 2 that the real fans come out. I expect to see all of you on Sunday – because SCVC fans are the best fans and we need to show it now. Meet me Sunday and show your support to our team.

Club News:

The club will be making an announcement at next Sunday’s game – please join us to hear firsthand.

I want to thank all of you that have renewed your dues. For those of you that haven’t – this will be your last formal newsletter. I turn the switch prior to the next newsletter. If you stop receiving information from me in about two weeks (when I expect the next newsletter); it’s because you haven’t renewed your dues for this season. If you feel I made an error in my record keeping or are unsure if you renewed – please email me, I enjoy talking with you (unless your name is Kent). The dues are $20.00 dollars; write a check or pay on line.

The board met after the game on Sunday. Here’s a quick update on the meeting.

Club Officers

President – Bill Martin

Vice President and Secretary – Sue Adams (the real brains of the outfit)

Vice President of Minnesota Operations – Rick Conwell

This is a new position and we have plans on how to use Rick in the coming year. Rick is still maintaining our website along with his new duties for the club.

Director of Public Relations – Phil Pusiteri

Board Members (in alphabetical order)

Hugh Fryling

Chris Harpole

Kent Peterson (who offered to drive the bus to put Sue in the President’s seat)

Larry Prieto

We discussed having a California dinner and will announce are plans around thanksgiving.

Our can food drive will be held on November 11th – the Bears game

And to end with; it was pointed out that my prediction of a 13 point victory over the Saints didn’t happen. So here’s my take on that – if we play the Saints again this year, we win by the same predicted margin of 13 points. This team will get on track and they will be tough to stop – mark my words. This team is tons better than 0 and 2 and we do get into the playoffs. We are now in the position of controlling our own destiny – we beat are division and we can (and will) win our division. And that’s my prediction this week.

Aside: when the schedule came out I didn’t like where the bye was – I now believe its perfect timing.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

All the team news at this time of year surrounds injuries – so I’ll address a few here. Chris Cook at corner is the latest casualty and there is some hindsight analysis going on here. The Minnesota Vikings traded Benny Sap and some analysts say he could be useful now. I don’t think this will be an issue – I’m a believer that Chris will have a tougher time regaining the starting position when he comes back, Lito Sheppard and Asher Allen will be fine here (no more injuries allowed here).

This brings me to Greg Camarillo; who we received in the trade for Benny Sap. Greg looked fantastic against the Seahawks, good hands and a knack to find the open space in the defense. Okay; Sidney Rice is special; height, speed, good hands and is going to missed and very few playing the game can make up for the loss of Sidney, but, I’ll still take the trade of Benny for Greg (the projected loss of Sidney for more games than Chris). Benny will also do fine – he’s a good player, I hope the best for him.

To me the biggest concern is the injury to John Sullivan. I’m not sure how long he’s going to be out – I’ll need to see the formal injury reports with the start of the season. John solidifies the line and it’s shown that he hasn’t been there during the first few pre-season games. I was thinking this was the year for the line to really come together and start the year fast. Right now I’m thinking the Vikings won’t hit their stride until the fifth or sixth game (when all their starters should be back).

The Vikes aces are Brett Favre – he typically starts the seasons fast and doesn’t dig holes for himself. I’ve seen enough of this throughout his career and it’s nice to be on the receiving side again. Our second (and third aces) are the defensive front seven. These guys can win games by themselves and I’m hoping they win a couple early in the season for us (and I hope they really clobber the Saints). Our secondary isn’t in as big a problem as most think and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Griffin, Winfield and Cook on the field at the same time before the season is over. We now have some really good athletes that can hit and I think Leslie Frazier will find away to get these guys on the field at the same time. The second half of the year belongs to us.

I was talking to a club member who stated the Childress era has gained two wins every year and it looks like this year those two wins are going to be the NFC Championship game and the Super Bowl. I thought about this for awhile and I have to say – I agree. Our team should be peaking at the right time and we have the talent; we may be starting the season with a few questions, but, we won’t be ending the season with any – this team is going to be good (really good). And I don’t care if you’re not supposed to say it – we win it all this year!

Club News:

We’re all set for the season and looking forward to the season – you have to love this time of year.

I want to thank all of you that have renewed your dues – this is a really big help to us at the start of the season. For those of you that haven’t; the dues will remain $20.00 dollars again this year. You can either send me a check or go onto our site and use our PayPal account. If you choose to use our PayPal service start at our sites home page; click on the "Join Our Club or Renew Your Dues" tab. Then click on the "Click Here to Pay by Credit Card" button. Answer a few questions that let me know who you are and you’re all done, ready for the season. This will probably be the last time I explain how to use our site efficiently – I don’t want to have those of you with computer skills to gang up on me, anyone with questions will have to direct them to me through email.

Oh yes – I still think we beat the Saints by 13 points.

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

Brett Favre is back – need I say any more. By now all of you have seen the presser and know the story. The 49ers game will be on national television and for those of you not going to the game – come to the club to watch the game.

Club News:

Training camp trip highlights: The Minnesota Vikings out did themselves this year at camp and all the folks that supported our club are thanked – we had a blast. We spent our two days at camp; had some weather issues, some emergency issues and still the Vikings thought of our club and our event. My main contact with the Vikings had an emergency in Minneapolis on our second day of camp – the day we had tornado watches and warnings later in the evening. Prior to his leaving town he left instructions with a co-worker who connected with me when we reached camp. Camp was moved from the field to indoors in the morning and moved from the practice fields to the stadium in the afternoon practice. Through all this the Vikings ensured we were taken care of and made for one of the better practices for the club. We saw an unbelievable hit by E.J. on Adrian in the backfield for a two yard loss – E.J. looked like he had his cat like reflexes back, like the E.J. prior to his injury. The team looked sharp. The O-Line should be better this year and they looked good; I spent a lot of time watching them, this group alone will increase our chances of going all the way this year. I also spent a lot of time watching Adrian and can say the words high and tight come to mind – I also have the pictures to prove this statement, we‟ll get some pictures up on our site in a few days. And I do mean how he was carrying the ball – for all you folks that don‟t understand my sense of humor (or lack of brain power if you like).

Nikki led the tour of Winter Park and it was a great tour. The Vikings are making so many changes around the facility – it felt like my first tour. More framed jerseys in the hallways, new pictures and the team is adding a media room for filming (being competed while we were there). The studio is going to be "Sports Authority Studios" and our club was the first ever to see the new rooms and it was very impressive. Next year we should be able to get pictures of our club members as if they are hosting the show. I did get pictures of the layout. We saw the locker room and the added rocking chair. When we saw the chair it was in front of Pat Williams‟s locker. As the story goes Jared Allen bought the chair for Brett Favre when he arrived last year; apparently Pat was designated as needing the chair while Brett was in Mississippi. I trust it has been moved.

The dinner has been defined as our best ever and that‟s coming from the players. We had 11 players, Tim Yotter from the Viking Update and 2 guests that were recipients of our charitable donations. Oscar Reed brought two "boys" from his „Boys to Men Circle" charity to speak to our group. If you haven‟t been to one of our trip dinners you don‟t know what you are missing. The format is the same as our California dinners with the primary difference being the number of club members. Imagine being in an intimate setting, maybe 30 club members and 11 Viking Alumni. Everyone has time to meet and greet the guests and we‟re talking about the very best in Viking history. So for all of you that missed this event – here‟s the list of attendees: Stu Voigt, Mick Tingelhoff, Dave Osborn, Randall McDaniel, Rickey Young, Bill "Boom-Boom" Brown, Oscar Reed, Rufus Bess, John Swain, Ted Brown and Jim Marshall. That‟s one Hall of Fame member and two that should be inducted (Jim and Mick) and that‟s not my opinion – that‟s the opinion of all the players present. I‟ve watched this dinner now for a few years and the one interesting point I‟ll bring to you is: Randall McDaniel will always sit and talk with Mick; Randall believes Mick is one of the best centers to ever play the game and he truly enjoys discussing line play with him, it‟s really fun to watch and listen too.

Okay enough with the past (although a really good past) it‟s time to discuss the future; it‟s dues time again. The dues will remain $20.00 dollars again this year. You can either send me a check or go onto our site and use our PayPal account. If you choose to use our PayPal service start at our sites home page; click on the "Join Our Club or Renew Your Dues" tab. Then click on the "Click Here to Pay by Credit Card" button. Answer a few questions that let me know who you are and you‟re all done, ready for the season.

For you members going to this Sunday‟s game – the tailgating will be in the "V" section. For any questions please call Tony Jimenez at: 661-900-2898. For everyone else; we‟ll be meeting at the club (as stated above). This game is on national television and will be aired in our region.

To end this letter all I can say is: I‟m ready for the season to begin – everything looks good and we‟ll be a force to be reckoned with, just wait and see. So here‟s my first prediction – we beat the Saints by 13 points and we look stronger than the score shows (remember camp showed high and tight; expect good things from Adrian this year, starting with this game).

Club News:

The training camp dates are August 9th and August 10th – a Monday and Tuesday. We once again are being treated like Kings from the Minnesota Vikings. We get On-Field Passes and VIP status for autographing. What this means is: any club member that attends camp will receive a pass that will allow them on the practice field – same as professional photographers. There are limitations for safety reasons and those will be explained to all that attend (same restrictions apply to the pro photographers). All club members receive VIP status with autographing. What this entails is; prior to the start of autographing, club members get in line ahead of the general public to the autograph line of their choice. (After the first autograph you must participate in general public lines.) This is a huge advantage for club members – instead of standing in line for the entire morning practice, you can watch the practice while having your place in line reserved (you don’t miss a thing.) On Monday the Linebackers are signing autographs and on Tuesday the Wide Receivers are signing. You are also allowed off the field to take advantage of all that camp has to offer – which is a lot.

We’ll be touring Winter Park on Wednesday August 11th. With this tour you’ll see all of Winter Park and I mean all of Winter Park. You’ll see Ziggy’s office, both the outdoor practice field and indoor practice field. You’ll see the weight room, the locker room, the cafeteria and all the photos throughout the hallways. We’ll get into the Draft War Room (you won’t see the Vikings War Room board – even our tour guide doesn’t get to see that information, I’ve tried). We also get into the different meeting rooms, training rooms and probably a lot more I’ll think of after I hit send on the email button. This is truly a great tour (and I did leave out one item that you have to experience and I’ll probably not mention it in any newsletters). Not intended on being a tease, but, an item that does need to be experienced.

Our club Dinner is scheduled for Thursday August 12th at Majors Sports Café in Bloomington. We’ll have a private room for this event – only club members and guests are allowed into the room. The food ranges from burgers to steaks or fish and the price ranges from $10.00 - $25.00 per person estimated. Club members order and eat of the provided menu – 100% your choice of evening meal. Are goal here is to have this event priced so every club member can afford the dinner. Which brings me to the guests: so far we have Stu Voigt, Mick Tingelhoff, Dave Osborn, Randall McDaniel, Rickey Young, Bill Brown, Oscar Reed and Jim Marshall. I also have more invites out there and hope to see two or three more names added to this list. This is really the best event of each year – we get approximately 25 – 30 club members and 10 guests; you really get a chance to meet our guests at this event. I’m also hoping Oscar Reed can bring one or two "kids" that have gone through his program so you can hear how our charitable donations effect lives first hand.

In Mankato we’ll be staying at the Day’s Inn in again. The rooms are $60.00 a night and mention SCVC when you reserve the room. The Day’s Inn phone number is: (507) 387-3332 and their address is: 1285 Range Street, Mankato, MN 56001. Please reserve your room by August 1st – after that it’s first come - first serve.

I need all people attending (that haven’t contacted me already) to let me know within the next week what events they want to attend. I travel early to these events and need to let everyone know the head counts to each event and with training camp I need all the names so I can arrange the field passes before I leave town. Everyone that signs up will receive an email from me with all meeting locations and pertinent information.

Club Members,

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

There’s not a lot of team news this time of year and that’s good news. The Vikings have stayed out of the news which can only tell us that our team is poised and in control – both football wise and personally. This creates a real good feeling – I believe this team will be more than ready come training camp.

Brett is throwing again – checking out his body, making sure he can last another season. He hasn’t said one way or the other – this just means if his body is sound, he’ll be back. Everything seems to be going well and I hope to see Brett in the 3rd pre-season game of the year – first home pre-season game.

Brad Childress went to Afghanistan this year and somehow the military was able to get his son transferred to where Brad was going to be so they could see each other. This says a lot for the Marine Corp as it does for Brad to support our troops. Everyone here deserves kudos.

Club News:

I’m still missing a couple of tickets to place the order with the 49ers for the pre-season game on August 22nd. Please get your money in so we can reserve the best available seats. – Thanks.

We’ll be staying at the Grosvenor Hotel while in San Francisco. The Bakersfield club will be staying there also – this will make it easier to get a car or van full of folks to travel together for tailgating purposes. The Hotel will have a service that will drive you to and from the game for $20.00 and has a shuttle service to the International airport – you can fly to San Francisco and not need to rent a car. I’ve attached a couple of flyers to this email for your review – all contact information is on the flyers.

We have a group rate with the Grosvenor – single or double occupancy is $79.00 and triple or quad occupancy is $89.00. Please let the desk know you are with our club – SCVC. The rates will be different if you don’t mention SCVC at time of reservation. Please reserve your room by July 21st – after that date we can’t guarantee you a room, goes back to first come – first served.

And finally to conclude our 49ers game discussion – the early word is, tailgating in Section V. If this changes – I’ll let you know, but for now, it’s Section V. Everyone have a good time.

Training camp dates are set and we’ll be visiting camp on August 9th and August 10th – a Monday and Tuesday. We’ll also be touring Winter Park and having our dinner. These dates will either be held on Wednesday August 11th or Thursday August 12th. We’ll have these dates determined early next week – its vacation season and we need all parties to agree.

To be open with all of you – I reserved the room for our dinner on Thursday August 12th, prior to the release of the training camp schedule. I’m not sure I could move this to Wednesday or if I would want too. It’s a little easier getting Viking guests on a Thursday – it’s an easier night out if they have work or have commitments during the week. So – what I’m saying is, for planning purposes we will be at camp on Monday and Tuesday, but if you’re flying in (as I am) plan on a Thursday night event. I’m still hoping to get the Winter Park tour and the dinner on the same day for those that are commuting to the Twin Cities for our events.

I also will start to need firm commitments from everyone attending any or all of our events. With regard to the Minnesota Vikings Training Camp I will need the full names of each person attending so I can arrange field passes. I will also need to know which days you plan on attending camp. I will be sending out information on where we’ll be meeting and what times to every individual that signs-up for one of our events. For those that have attended in the past we’ll be following similar plans to what was done in the past. For the first time visitors – you’re in for a real treat.

I’m sure I missed something – so if you have any questions please email or call me, I’ll be happy to explain this to each and every one of you. These are some of our best events each year and I can’t explain how wonderful these events are, but I’ll try if you have the time.

Don’t be afraid to check out the Vikings website – a lot of camp information can be found there also.

Club Members,

Minnesota Vikings Team News:

It seems like the Brett Favre talk has decreased from last year, but, is far from removed as a topic of discussion. So I figured I should speak-up this year also. First of all I believe Brett will be back and I want to see Brett back.

I believe the offensive line will be stronger this year – Phil Loadholt and John Sullivan have a full year starting under their belt. I remember talking about the first year of playing with Randall McDaniel (the best offensive lineman to ever play the game) and he said the first year he was still thinking about what he had to do on any given play. Remember the offensive line has to all see and react the same way, any member seeing a different set will make a play that differs from the rest of the line. These five guys have to all see and block the same scheme or it will fail. Randall said year two was when he started playing without needing to think first and the rest is history. Randall also played on a very good unit – Gary Zimmerman and Jeff Christy for examples. Well this year’s line won’t have an injured Steve Hutchinson (the best offensive lineman playing today) and Bryant McKinnie is playing like a Pro-Bowler. With Phil and John playing faster and Hutch and Bryant playing to their potential – we’ll have one of the best lines in the league this year. This has to be viewed as good news to Brett.

With that said Brett convinced me last year that he is worthy of being called a Minnesota Viking no matter what he decides. I think he’ll be back because all reports I read said he had fun playing last year. These reports came from people as close to Brett as you can get – his brother for one. For a competitor like he is; having fun while playing can make all the difference, helps you forget the hits he took in the championship game. I also thought it time to let you know how I feel if Brett decides to retire. If Brett does retire I’ll thank him for what he did to improve our club and I’ll have all the respect in the world for him because of the confidence and championship character he brought to our Minnesota Vikings. I believe these character traits will stay with this club – I think everyone related to the team believes they are championship material now.

OK – I’ll get off my Favre topic and wait to see him wearing the purple armor this coming season.

The Williams Wall will be intact again this year – although the court case isn’t finalized. If you haven’t heard the Williams’ can play while their court case is in appeal – this is estimated to take all season. The case did produce enough evidence for every Minnesota Vikings fan to get upset with the drug testing process and the league notification process. We now know for certain that other players who took the Starcaps product were found out but, didn’t get suspended. They had a private hearing instead of the public hearing the Williams Wall is enduring. I still believe this would have been the case for the Williams Wall if the information would not have been leaked.

We also now know that the Williams duo (or their families) didn’t leak the news and the Minnesota Vikings didn’t leak the news. I suspected this early on – not because I’m a fan or that I’m that smart, because they didn’t stand to gain anything from the news being leaked. In fact they stood to lose big if this information got leaked (and they did).

I’m also disappointed that the league hasn’t done enough to find the hole and plug it – to quote our President. I don’t believe the league leaked the news either and in a warped way I understand their position. I think someone involved with the testing or handling of the information leaked the news without the leagues permission. I also think the league needs to improve their notification policies when they have information impacting the players. But, for all you folks that believe the league should be punished, with a confidential hearing approach, the leagues position could have been these issues can be handled case by case and let justice be fair and still carry the big stick

approach to steroid use or masking steroid use pharmaceuticals. When the case became public the league had to be tough because of their policy. OK I’ll let this topic drop for awhile also.

All reports are the injuries to EJ, Antoine and Cedric are progressing well and we can expect to see all of them this year on the field. The Thursday opener against the Saints may be in question for all of them, but, we should have them for another Championship run this year. All reports on Toby Gerhart are positive. I think having Toby on the club could extend the career of Adrian by as much as three years and I believe he’ll be contributing the whole time. He’s a smash mouth runner – the offensive line is going to love his running style. There is more good news; Jimmy Kennedy resigning for one, but it’s time I moved on to other topics.

Club News:

Has everyone checked out the clubs website changes – things do not stop in the off season for the greatest fan club in America? Our web master and his team have been up to their old tricks again. I’ll try and outline a few of the more notable changes.

To start with, as we come into dues season, you can now pay your annual dues online though or secure PayPal account. If you want to send dues in by check – fine, but if you’re an instant gratification person, you can now pay online.

You can now purchase Minnesota Vikings collectibles (books, jerseys and related items) on our site. This topic I want to discuss for a second. We have arranged a commission if you purchase these items when you go through our site. Because we are not licensed to sell NFL merchandise ourselves you’ll get connected to a different site (Amazon for example) and they will sell you the item. We get a commission and you get the exact same price as if you went to Amazon yourself and purchased the items. This is also true if you see an ad on our site – if you click on an add that takes you to a different site and you purchase an item – the club make a small amount on the transaction and you pay the same as if you went to the site yourself (you aren’t paying the commission – the other site is). Our web team is looking out for our charities and hopefully this idea pans out. This area will continue to grow as we develop more relationships with suppliers of Minnesota Vikings merchandise. Aside: I would really like the "Purple Hearts and Golden Memories" book, so if any of you want to know my birthday just send me an email. OK all kidding aside (I’ll show Chris the page) this is a great book to collect autographs. If you haven’t seen the book – it’s a real winner.

There are numerous other site changes – please poke around on the site to see them all. I’ll update other changes in future newsletters. With that said; you can see all the current videos, blogs and related information found on the Minnesota Vikings website and the Star Tribune’s website in one location on our site. I use these frequently and really like them for their convenience. I still regularly go to these other sites, but, when I don’t have all the time (like at lunch) I stay informed using our site.

Club trip reminder - the club will be going back for the last week of training camp this year. Training Camp dates has not been announced at this time. I’m guessing (and I mean guessing) that we’ll be back at camp for Monday and Tuesday August 9th and 10th. Use this date for long range planning purposes only. I will firm this up after the Vikings have had time to plan their camp schedule. We’ll be having our dinner, including Viking Alumni, when we are back and I’m in the process of arranging tours of the dome and Winter Park. Please send me an email if you are possibly interested in attending.

Team News:
I held off on writing this until we got through the draft and had a season schedule. Well – the information is in and here you go.

Please find a Pacific time schedule enclosed with this letter.

The Vikings draft: The Vikings traded out of the first round by dropping four spots. From what I read the Vikes had four players on the board that they coveted at the time. They dropped the four spots being guaranteed of getting a player they wanted and an additional draft pick. Again the Vikes showed smooth control of the draft – same as in recent years and this move was one of the better. The Vikings chose Chris Cook a cornerback from Virginia. The Vikes did go for depth at DB with the injuries to Antoine Winfield and Cedric Griffin with this pick. Because I expect both Antoine and Cedric to play; at least most of the season, this is a solid player that hopefully can develop before he’s needed on the field. Which brings up an interesting point – it appears adding depth was the primary focus of this year’s draft. A good trivia question would be: when was the last time the Vikings didn’t need to fill a position but, rather filled in depth at positions? I don’t know the answer – but I like being a big dog, it feels like Viking’s football.

With the Vikings second pick they took running back Toby Gerhart. Toby can be the second guy to help fill the hole left by Chester Taylors departure. Again – I think this was another good pick. Adrian is going to be the main focus when it comes to running the ball, but, Toby is a downhill runner and I expect him to see a fair amount of playing time this season.

I’m not that well versed to discuss the remaining picks – the Vikings took Everson Griffen, defensive end from Southern Cal, Chris Degeare, offensive tackle from Wake Forest, Nathan Triplett, linebacker from Minnesota, Joe Webb a quarterback from UAB, Mickey Schuler a tight end from Penn State and Ryan D’Imperio another linebacker from Rutgers. I hope the best for everyone and I think the coaching jobs are going to get harder this year. The competition to make the roster is going to be stiff this year.

The club will be going back for the last week of training camp this year. I’m guessing (and I mean guessing) that we’ll be back at camp for Monday and Tuesday August 9th and 10th. Use this date for long range planning purposes only. I will firm this up after the Vikings have had time to plan their camp schedule. Once again Roger Goodell didn’t check with me first when the league planned the Vikings schedule. (The Vikings first pre-season game is on the road.) This means we won’t be going to a game the same week camp ends – as we like. We will be having our dinner, including Viking Alumni, when we are back and I’m in the process of arranging tours of the dome and Winter Park.

The Vikings are playing the 49ers the second pre-season game and the 49ers sound like they will work with us for group tickets for this game. If any of you are interested in going to San Francisco to see this game; either drop me a line or send me an email.

The Viking’s are opening the regular season on Thursday night at New Orleans and the Saints will not be working with us for tickets for this game. If you want to go to the season opener – try the NFL ticket exchange or use your favorite ticket broker. There isn’t any games (other than the two mentioned) on our side of the country this year and we won’t be attending an away game as a group. We may conspire to go back to Minnesota as a group (if we get enough interest) to see our team smack around an opponent. With that said the Packers and the Bears games will be difficult- do to the popularity of these games.

Team News:
Hello everyone – it’s time I chime in and talk about John Randle being elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. To start with I would like to congratulate John on this accomplishment – he truly deserves this honor. John played 11 seasons with the Vikes; 1990 to 2000. The two things I think about first are probably not what got him elected to the hall – I think of the face paint and that high energy motor he had, at times I didn’t think even John could control that motor. He is another player that revolutionized his position; I believe that is why he made the hall as quickly as he did. John set the standard for defensive tackles and that standard is the same one used today. Let’s look at a few of John’s accomplishments.

The first thing that jumps to mind is that John was an undrafted rookie – which only says there’ll be good players on the board this year for the Vikes, no matter the draft position. An undrafted rookie probably viewed as too small to play defensive tackle in most teams minds. The Vikings must have seen heart and realized they had a winner very early in camp that first year. I didn’t go to camp that year with the club, but that sure would have been a treat. Can you imagine the coaches when they saw this guy on the field for the first time – even if they had an idea of what he brought to the table, I’m sure they were giddy when they saw him practice. John didn’t start right out of the gate for the Vikes; but once he learned the defense and got to the starting lineup – he never relinquished the spot. John literally took over from there.

A quick peek at John’s career: John played 11 seasons with the Vikes – as mentioned earlier. He had 10+ sacks in 8 straight of those seasons, 1993 to 2000. As a Viking he rates third in sacks and he is first among tackles with his 114 sacks. He started in 6 straight Pro Bowls – years 1993 to 1998. And he played for 14 seasons. If there’s one guy on the Vikings team that understands what John brings to the game it’s Brett Favre – he saw John’s game first hand. If I had the chance to ask Brett anything – I think I would ask him to describe John Randle’s play and what the Pack used to do to try and slow him down. I think that would lead to an interesting conversation.

John did attend one of our dinners and I did get a chance to meet him there. I wish I had an interesting story to tell you all about from that meeting, but I don’t. When John attended our dinner it was on a return flight from one of his Pro Bowl visits; I felt it was incredibly gracious of him to join us, especially at that point in his career (everyone wants a little time from the current pro players – to the point where they get little privacy). But even with the time pressures of a pro athlete John and his wife made the trip and that was very special to me.

John; for the Southern California Viking Club I would like to congratulate you on being selected into the 2010 class of Pro Football’s Hall of Fame. This is truly an honor and for those of us that watched your play – I can say you belong; you’ll be among your piers for eternity. Congratulations!

Team News:
Hello everyone – it’s been a week so I felt it was time to write all of you. We saw our team lose a close one; so let’s discuss this a little. We were one turnover or a flip of the coin away from going to the Super Bowl. It’s always hard to have your season end like this. Our guys held the Saints to 257 total yards – compare that stat with the five turnovers we gave them and our defense kicked butt. When you look at the offensive stats – we kicked butt there also, which only means our mistakes cost us the game. Had we not had the mistakes; we would have won that game as big as we won the Cowboys game, but we didn’t. So, now that a week has passed it’s easier to accept the loss, only because we have too.

The league has reviewed some of the calls in the game and admitted the hit to Brett’s knees was a penalty and should have nullified the first interception and awarded the Vikes a first down on the play. They basically said no comment to the Leber pass interference call in overtime – which is an interesting position in itself. The league also agreed there was an unnecessary roughness hit on Brett after he handed the ball off. It’s not much help after the fact, but, hopefully the league learns something that helps prevent this in the future.

Not much else to say about the game – we did lose, it did hurt.

The next phase in the football year now begins and for fans it starts with questions. Questions like “Will Brett Favre return?” “Will Pat Williams retire?” “Will E.J. be healthy and can he return?” “What is the prognosis with Cedric?” “What’s the deal with the William’s wall legal action?” I’m sure I missed some of your questions – draft possibilities and unrestricted free agents and restricted free agents. With regard to free agents I know this – Chester Taylor, Artis Hicks, Benny Sapp, Jimmy Kennedy and Greg Lewis are all unrestricted free agents and Ray Edwards, Tarvaris Jackson, Fred Evans, Naufahu Tahi, Karl Paymah, Ryan Cook and Eric Frampton are restricted free agents. Every one of the restricted free agents will become an unrestricted free agent if the CBA is extended before the start of free agency with the exception of Eric Frampton (I’m not sure of the dates or any possible extensions pending).

I know everyone has an opinion of who we should draft and who we should resign – so I’ll let you guys discuss that amongst yourselves again this year. For me I believe it’s a higher priority to evaluate our free agents – I believe the Vikes are the most talented team in the league and it would seem important to me to resign the key folks that helped that talent pool. I also believe that this team has done the best job of improving year after year (after the Zigi ownership change) than any team in the league. It’s my position this year (as it was last year) that this team will field the best team possible and will improve again next year.

Club News:
We once again raised money for charity this year – $2100.00 dollars in all. We donated $500.00 each to The Page Foundation, The Link, The Keyboarding Club (Brent McClanahan’s charity) and Boys to Men (Oscar Reed’s charity) with an additional $100.00 going to Brent’s charity throughout the year. We had our biggest can drive support this year. We had the Purple Reign Racing Team show up at a game with one of their cars and Brent McClanahan (wearing Super Bowl rings) and the Bakersfield club joined us for a game. So all in all we had a good year as a group.

We will be going back for training camp again next summer – dates are not confirmed, estimated as the first or second week in August. These dates always take longer than I like to confirm – we have to wait for the Vikings to finalize their camp plans and the Vikings have to wait for the league to complete the game scheduling before they can complete their camp plans. The estimated dates come from me looking back into history and seeing what was done in the past – it’s my best guess. Our agenda will stay the same – a couple of days at camp, tours of Winter Park and the Dome and a dinner with Viking alumni as guests. If you haven’t been to one of our summer camp events you should consider coming.

There’s a good chance we’ll be soliciting board members again for next year. Lyle has retired to Arizona and it’s looking probable we’ll be losing Rick next year. Rick is considering a job back in Minnesota and I hope him and his family the best with these difficult decisions. Last year Eric and Linda followed work to help their families and it’s always a little sad when good folks leave, but seeing how I made the same decisions in my life I wish them the best. Besides – if Rick moves back to the Minneapolis area; we’ll be able to see him at our Minneapolis dinner.

For you first year members; you won’t be hearing from me as much during the off-season as you did during the season. You will hear from me and I will answer some of the questions from above; when they are announced, you can expect a letter approximately every month.

Fun Stuff:
Did you know Dan Marino of the Miami Dolphins had the first 5,000 yard passing season (1984)?

Bo Jackson: "If my mother put on a helmet and shoulder pads and a uniform that wasn't the same as the one I was wearing, I'd run over her if she was in my way. And I love my mother."

Vince Lombardi: "The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur."

"Football is like life; it requires perseverance, self-denial, hard work sacrifice, dedication and respect for authority."

Terry Bradshaw: "I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid."

William "The Refrigerator" Perry: "I've been big ever since I was little."

Joe Namath: Prior to Super Bowl III: "I've got news for you. We're gonna win the game. I guarantee it."

Paul Tagliabue: "I'm a firm believer that all sports will eventually be global. Someday, we may have a quarterback from China named Yao Fling."

Thanks everyone for another great year – I’ll be seeing you.

Go Vikes!

Team News:
Hello everyone – is everybody still riding the high from Sunday’s game. The Cowboy’s came to Zigi-hood and left with their stars between their legs – our team really looked sharp in all phases of the game. I haven’t reviewed the game, but it looked to me like we saw the best tackling yet this year. The Cowboys actually ran more plays then us and had a little bit of an edge in time of possession. I’m not completely surprised by this – when you have scores of 47 and 45 yards, you don’t eat much time. But the primary thing I saw was just great tackling; when the Cowboys completed a pass they were tackled right there, I don’t believe there was one missed tackle. This defensive effort made it virtually impossible for the Cowboys to get down the field. Along with great tackling – we saw a great pass rush, Romo was pressured all day and he made the mistakes because of this. Yes; this was a great game – when you can smoke a team that everyone says (talking heads on TV, no intended insult here) is the best team in the playoffs, you made a statement.

Well in this game victories are short lived and this week is no exception – we have the Saints to think about. So; here are some of my rambling thoughts regarding the Saints. Before next week we will hear the same mind numbing talking heads tell us how great the Saints are – I’m here to tell you the Vikes are the better team. Let me remind you of who the Saints played and how those games went. To start with the Saints played the Bucs twice and the Bucs beat them once – it was the second to the last game, but the number one seed was still in question. The Bucs record – 3 and 13, oh there’s a power house. The Dolphins scored 34 points against them and they were a below 500 club. They also drew the Lions, Rams and Redskins in this year’s schedule (when you play out of your division and you draw these teams you had better win) and the Rams and Redskins almost beat the Saints scoring 53 points between them. Remember the Saints had to play the Eastern conference this year and the Cowboys went into their house and beat them, this was the game that got the December monkey off of Romo’s back. Why do I mention these things – because the Vikings are the best team the Saints will face this year. The Saints haven’t faced a defense as good as ours; we were second in scoring to the Saints but, we drew the Ravens and the Steelers – not the Rams and the Skins. And lastly – I’ll take Percy over Bush anytime, our special teams are better, kicking and receiving.

I’m here to say right now – we play our game and T-Jack will see time in the fourth quarter to protect Brett for our final game, we win this game big.

Club News:
Not much for club news this week, but I would like to thank the 130 members that showed up for the game last week. Everyone was well behaved except for me – when I got home Chris was laughing at me for being so horse, I could hardly speak.

The NFC Championship game is at 3:30 PM California time and I want to see everyone at Northwood’s – except maybe Larry, if he’s not at Northwood’s he’s at the game.

NFL Hall of Famers:
In 1964, Carl Eller, a consensus All-America with the University of Minnesota, was a first-round draft pick of both the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills of the then-rival American Football League. A 6-6, 247-pound defensive stalwart, Eller opted to stay in a familiar environment and signed with the Vikings. For the next 15 years through 1978, he was a fixture in one of pro football’s most effective defensive alignments. He finished his career with one final season with the Seattle Seahawks in 1979, having played in 225 regular season games.

During Eller’s career the Vikings enjoyed great success on the field. Starting in 1968, Eller’s fifth campaign, Minnesota won 10 NFL/NFC Central Division titles in the next 11 seasons. The Vikings won the 1969 NFL championship and NFC crowns in 1973, 1974, and 1976 and played in four Super Bowls.

A major factor in this long string of successes was a ferocious defensive line often referred to as “The Purple People Eaters.” Eller was the left end of a line that included Jim Marshall at the opposite end and Hall of Famer Alan Page and Gary Larsen at the tackles. Extremely quick and mobile for his size, Carl was an excellent defender against the run and superb as a pass rusher. In one three-string season from 1975 to 1977, he recorded 44 sacks, according to unofficial statistics (sacks did not become an official NFL statistic until 1982). He also was effective in blocking kicks and, during his career he recovered 23 opponents’ fumbles, the third best mark in NFL annals at the time of his retirement.

He became a regular his rookie season and was named first- or second-team All-Pro every year from 1967 through 1973. He was All-NFL or All-NFC 1968 through 1973 and then All-NFC again in 1975. In 1971, he won the George Halas Award as the NFL’s leading defensive player and was selected to play in six Pro Bowls (1969-1972, 1974, and 1975).

Team News:
Well the team ended the season on a high note – probably the best six quarters of football put together by any team. We ended with a 12 – 4 record; improved another two games over last year, third straight year of this accomplishment. We won the Norse division for the second straight year – one of only three teams to win back to back division titles and were the only one that had another team above 500 in the division, the other two had easier divisions. In a league where teams seem to make it to the top one year and fall the next – this team keeps getting better. We earned the number two seed in the playoffs and receive a first round buy (it also wouldn’t surprise me to have New Orleans beaten and we play multiple home games). Things are looking pretty good – we stay focused and we’ll win the next three.

So here’s what we know: we’ll be playing Sunday January 17th at 10:00 AM Pacific time (and we’ll be meeting at Northwood). We’ll be hosting the Cowboys if Dallas wins its rematch with the Eagles on Saturday evening (5:00 PM start), or we’ll play the winner of the Arizona / Green Bay game if Philadelphia beats Dallas. The Cards / Pack game is on Sunday at 1:40 PM California time. Because New Orleans is playing on Saturday the 16th – we’ll know before our game starts who we’ll get to smack around in the championship game.

Club News:
The club got some more good press over the weekend – we were in the Playbook program that is handed out at the dome before each game. We were featured on the WeAreVikingsFans.com Playbook page. As I hear the story the picture of the Screamin Norwegian with all of us around the car was there as well as a nice write up on us. So what does this mean - well 63,856 people got a copy of the program (paid attendance to last week’s game). I’m trying to get some copies now – as soon as I do we’ll get the good stuff up on our site so all of you can see. If any of you had friends or family at the game – you may want to get their copy of the program. We can thank the Minnesota Vikings for this honor; this is the type of respect they show us every year when we’re back for camp.

On a little sadder news we had a couple of club members in the hospital during the holidays; Randy Wold and Steve Heydt. As it turned out they were in the same hospital at the same time. I haven’t talked with Steve, but Randy will be going in for surgery soon, he didn’t know the date of the surgery when we talked. Please keep these two in your prayers – thanks.

We will be meeting at Northwood for all the playoff games; we’ll be having drawings and all our usual fun, Kent will continue to lead us in the “Skol Vikings” fight song, Bob will be high fiving the room on every score and we’ll continue to rock the place with as much enthusiasm as every fan at the Dome.

NFL Hall of Famers:
Offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman is one of just a handful of players to earn the honor of being named to two National Football League All-Decade Teams. His superior play earned him a spot on the NFL's 1980s All-Decade Team even though he played just four seasons during the decade. Following the 1999 season, he was named to the 1990s All-Decade Team as well.
Originally selected by the New York Giants in the first round of the 1984 supplemental draft, Zimmerman's signing rights were traded to the Minnesota Vikings for two second-round picks in the 1986 draft. Gary was later acquired by the Denver Broncos in a trade with Minnesota prior to the last preseason game of the 1993 season.

After joining the Vikings in 1986, Zimmerman began a streak of 169 consecutive starts that lasted until 1996 when late-season shoulder surgery sidelined him. Along the way he earned first- or second-team All-Pro honors eight times. During the same period he was selected to play in seven Pro Bowls.

In Minnesota, Zimmerman anchored an offensive line that helped the Vikings lead the NFC in rushing in 1991.

Zimmerman was equally adept at pass blocking, as evidenced by the fact that Minnesota and Denver quarterbacks led their conferences in passing in 1986, 1988, 1993, and 1996.

Zimmerman's ability to persevere and his desire to play, earned him the respect and admiration of teammates and opponents alike. Even though he missed the final two games of the 1996 season he was still selected to play in the Pro Bowl and was voted first-team All-Pro honors.

Steve Largent, a 5-11, 187-pound wide receiver with only average size and speed but armed with exceptional determination and concentration, became one of history's most outstanding pass catchers during his 14-season, 200-game career with the Seattle Seahawks from 1976 to 1989.

At the time of his retirement, he held six major career pass receiving records – most receptions (819), most consecutive games with a reception (177), most yards on receptions (13,089), most touchdowns on receptions (100), most seasons with 50 or more receptions (10) and most seasons with 1,000 yards or more on receptions (8).

He was the fourth-round pick of the Oilers and the 117th player taken in the 1976 National Football League Draft. He played only four pre-season games with Houston before being traded to the expansion Seahawks for an eighth-round draft pick. It was the catch of the century for the Seattle. Largent became an almost instant star with the Seahawks with 54 receptions, third best in the NFC, in his rookie season.

He led the AFC with 71 receptions in 1978 and he had five other seasons with 70 or more receptions. The sure-handed receiver, who ran nearly perfect pass routes, also led the NFL in pass-receiving yardage in 1979 and 1985. An All-Pro choice in 1983, 1985, and 1987, he was also named All-AFC three times and selected for seven Pro Bowls in a ten-season span between 1978 and 1987.

Seemingly indestructible, Steve missed only four games because of injuries his first 13 seasons. An NFL Man of the Year winner in 1988, Largent also was a positive force off the field.

Please everyone; have a happy new year, a happy new decade and a real happy end to this football season.

I could spend time talking about the Bengals and Panthers game, but decided not too today. Instead I thought it best to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Everyone best wishes this Holiday season. This is the season that makes everyone a little better, a better spouse, a better parent, a better sibling, a better friend; so let’s all do our part and try and be the people we would like to be every day.

Team News:
Well the Cardinals really took it to us. Not much you can say here but, we got beat.

As I listened to the football talking heads I came to one real conclusion – they don’t mean squat. In a way I’m glad we flushed all the band wagon fans – we don’t need them. If you don’t bleed purple – you’re nothing but a fake. I heard last night that Green Bay would relish the chance to play us again – well, so do I. A good year is beating Green Bay once, a great year is beating Green Bay twice and a fantastic year is beating them for a third time. I for one don’t believe this game with Arizona reflects this team. We were flat in all areas – this will be corrected and we will be a force to be reckoned with.

I have to spend some time talking about E.J. This injury was the worst I’ve seen in a long time. I’m sure my reaction was the same as many, but here’s what I felt when I saw the play and the replay on Sunday night. My first feeling was nausea – this injury showed the real physics that is happening in today’s football with all these great athletes. I literally didn’t care about the score of the game (still don’t) – I just felt ill. My second reaction was OMG this could be career ending. You can ask the people I was sitting with – this one play changed the entire game for me, it showed on my face. At this point I haven’t watched any video of the injury and I don’t plan too in the future. Basically I’m praying for a full recovery.

I’m not sure how many of you follow all the little side stories of Viking football, but, E.J. is one of those special guys; the type you’d like to have as a neighbor. Here are a couple of examples of what I’ve read about E.J. He was voted by the team as the Viking Community Man of the Year. He won this honor primarily for his help with inner city youths. E.J. started a youth foundation to help underserved children in the Twin Cities. (A little aside – this is a similar program to what we support with the Link, the foundation that Jim Marshall and Oscar Reed help form.) Now E.J. didn’t win the award for just starting a foundation in name with good intentions – he actively supports the foundation with a lot of his time, he is very aware of what they do and how they help. This is not all that he has done to help his community (although he has great passion for the foundation). He has helped as much or more as any Viking in recent years. It’s been reported that he’s been involved with the United Way, Police Athletic League, Minneapolis Parks and Recreation Board, Arc Greater Twin Cities, and Boys & Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities. This is a guy you’d like to call a friend.

And lastly on the subject – I have read some good news. First of all it was reported that E.J. only had a broken leg – no ligament or cartilage damage. Now it’s early and the reports may be questionable, but this is good news. I also read that a doctor, who has worked with skiers, was predicting that E.J.’s bone could be healed in eight weeks and he could start running in twelve weeks and training camp next year is possible. All this is speculation, but, it helped me with my feelings – maybe it will help you also. We’ll all know more in the coming days.

Club News:
We have a treat for you this weekend – Brent McClanahan is planning on joining us for the Bengals game. For the young ones in our group – Brent played running back from 1973 to 1980. He played on three Super Bowl teams and only once in Brent’s career the Vikes did not win the Central Division Championship. Brent is now teaching at South High School in Bakersfield and is one of the charities we support. Brent is now a business teacher and he helped create the Keyboarding Club – the non-profit arm for raising funds for this department at South High School. For most of you; you realize that business classes are not core classes in California and therefore our tax dollars do very little to help – that’s where we come in and you can also. Any person wanting to donate to the Keyboarding club; please see me and I can get you the tax ID number, your donation is tax deductable.

I also got some good feedback from one of you. The comments or questions were regarding how the club operates, what are the club philosophies and how does that pertain to finances.

I want to outline a few of the club’s philosophies today. To start with we are a legal non-profit company licensed with the State of California. Nobody related to the club makes anything – its 100% volunteers. If anyone in the club runs errands – they don’t get mileage, all the board members donate their time and in some cases minor expenses. Every board member pays dues and we’ve had multiple board members donate 100’s of dollars at times – this is a real special board. The dues primarily go to support the office supplies and related expenses to keep the SCVC open for business (we have a club phone and a website). As a club we do pick up expenses for doing our taxes and we have club award plaques each year that we purchase. All major office items are donated by the board members (I had to buy this computer to complete this letter – not the club). Our philosophy is: as a person you’re going to have these items in your life and using them for the club is honing your skills so we figure that’s good enough (Lord knows I need the practice).

Because the California dinner is what instigated the thoughts – here’s my comments in light of this event. As a club we primarily raise our funds through drawings at each game to support this event. Every dollar spent on game days helps support this effort. The only expense, for the dinner, we pass along to the members is the cost of their meal. The club pays for flying the players and their spouses out to the event, we pay for all dinner expenses for the players and their families, we pay for all the hotel rooms for the players and we pay for the banquette room rental (along with ant incidentals I may have left out). What we have never paid for (or ever plan on paying for) is a fee to get players to come out. Our philosophy is: we won’t pay anyone to come to our event, but, it shouldn’t cost them anything either. The players are volunteering their time.

And to finish my thoughts – at a minimum we’ll donate $2000 to charities, sometimes we’ll donate more. I know this is a very quick overview and probably spurred more questions; hopefully answered a couple. To help with the possible questions – I’ll stay after the Bengals game to answer any questions. I’ll also bring a couple of copies of our last taxes if anyone wants to see the club financials in greater detail. (I would like to bring current numbers, but, I can’t at this time – we lost our volunteer bookkeeper this year. So if we have a bookkeeper or an accountant that is interested in donating their time – we’ll have a board opening next year, so much for the shameless plug for help.) It’s also our philosophy to be as open as possible to club members – so anyone interested please stick around after the game and we can talk.

This is truly a great club and it’s because of you more than me.

Next letter I’ll bring back the fun stuff and get off my pulpit – well I’ll try anyway.

See you all at Northwood,

Club Members,

Team News:
Well two weeks have passed and we’ve seen two more victories. Clearly the team really looked good in the Seattle game – we’ll after the 0 to 0 first quarter. The team took control and never looked back. T-Jack played a little of the third quarter and all of the fourth; it’s always a good sign when your number 2 quarterback is playing for more than a series or two. All and all I truly believe the team is getting better each week – a real good sign for Viking fans.

With the team looking good I felt it was time to take up another topic – making sure the Vikings stay in Minnesota.

I’m not sure how many of you are following the “Dome Issue” but I’ll give you my two cents worth anyway. The Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC) basically took off their gloves and smacked it across the face of the Minnesota Vikings. OK what they really did is offer the Vikings any playoff revenues that the dome commission keeps but the Vikings have to extend their lease another two years. This doesn’t sound as bad as it really is – with another part of the proposal the MSFC threatened to start charging the Vikings an additional 4 million in rent each year for the remainder of the contract if they don’t sign. Yes there are legal ways the MSFC could pull this off, but, considering the Vikings have the worst stadium deal in the NFL and are at the bottom of the revenue stream, threatening to make it worse doesn’t help keep the team where we want them. It was at this point, and for the first time under the Wilf’s ownership, that I felt the Vikings could be leaving Minnesota.

The best thing that could have happened to the Minnesota Vikings was having the Wilf’s take ownership. Just look at the team – has there been any off field issues, like the love boat or ticket scalping. The answer is no – the Vikings are truly a team to admire right now for there off field behaviors. Does everyone realize that Madieu Williams donated 2 million dollars to the University of Maryland to establish an International Initiatives Health Center? This is a far cry from negative press – in-fact this is a far cry from helping to raise money for a worthy cause, this is giving back to help humanity. This represents so much of what the Vikings are about today off the field. And how about what the Vikings are doing on the field – from an (pick your own adjective here) engineers perspective; it could only get better by one game. So it seems to me; the goals stated by the Wilf’s in the beginning of their ownership reign has come true – on and off the field.

I say these things realizing that the dome issue is more complicated than I really want to get into today. I also say these things realizing that this issue is now coming to a head and there’s not a Vikings fan out there that can ignore the issue any more. So here are a couple of things I think every fan can do. First of all join the Minnesota Momentum group at www.minnesotamomentum.com. This will keep you informed on what is going on as well as letting this group know you stand with them and that you want the Vikings to stay in Minnesota and you want the Vikings to get a fare stadium deal to ensure the best Viking football for years to come. The second thing you can do is: when you’re out there blogging – mention that the Vikings need to stay in Minnesota and to do that you support a new stadium deal for the Vikings. And while you’re blogging – mention Mick Tingelhoff and Jim Marshall still need to get into the Hall of Fame.

I would like to congratulate E.J. Henderson for being voted the Vikings Man of the Year.

The last bit of team news is that Brad Childress had his contract extended and with the way the team is playing (and acting) he deserved it. Congratulations to Brad also.

Club News:
I would like to thank everyone for supporting our can food drive this year. We collected the most food in club history – every one of you can give yourselves a hand, thanks.

Remember that this Sunday’s game is now a 1:15 start time.

The Arizona game has been changed to the Sunday night game. This will be a 5:30 PM start Pacific Time. All club members attending this game – check your plans to make sure this time change doesn’t create an issue for yourself.

With some sadder news – I need to cancel the dinner this year. In an unfortunate turn of events, our revenues at this time will not support the dinner. We can do more good by postponing this event this year. Sorry about this.

was the Dallas Cowboys' first-ever draft choice in 1961. For the next 14 seasons, his play on defense was so outstanding that he became popularly known as "Mr. Cowboy." As a tackle, Lilly was a first-team All-NFL choice every year from 1964 through 1969, then again in 1971, and 1972.

Extremely durable, Bob played in 196 consecutive regular-season games. His only career "miss" came in the 1973 championship game with Minnesota, when a leg injury put him on the bench. Post-season play became a way of life for the 6-5, 260-pound Olney, Texas, native. The Cowboys played in seven NFL/NFC title contests in an eight-year period from 1966 through 1973 and also in Super Bowls V and VI. Bob also was selected to play in 11 Pro Bowls. He is the first player who spent his entire career with the Cowboys to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Team News:
The bye week is over and the good guys won even when they didn’t play – with everyone in the division loosing. The bye came at a good time for us; 50% of the season behind us, a few people can heal and every player would like to have a rest half way done with the season. I expect the Vikes to hold anyone back from playing Detroit that could use another week to heal – mostly Antoine Winfield, we’ll need him healthy for the final push.

I listened to a lot of talking heads this week and I’ve come to the conclusion either they’re a whole lot smarter than me or maybe I’m just different (or both). In my humble opinion; the Vikings are playing with respect, similar to the days of Marshall and company. By this I mean – it looks like all 53 players are playing to earn the respect of the other players in the locker room – they’re playing for the team, they’re playing for themselves, they’re playing for the coaches, they’re playing for the respect of each other. I think the leadership of the elder statesmen (and Favre is one of these) helps, but, something else is happening. Every player, when on the field, looks like they’re closer to being a single unit. A better example can’t be given than the special teams units. They changed from being one of the worst units in the league last year to being arguably the best units this year. To me they earned (or are earning) the respect of their fellow teammates. Some people wanted to call this a swagger, but, I didn’t hear any of the players sounding or acting cocky – in fact I’ve heard the opposite. I believe every player for the Vikes believe they haven’t played their best ball and in fact, I’ve heard more players say there not happy with aspects of their game and intend on improving. If this team continues to improve and stays healthy, watch out; the final 8 games will be fun.

It’s also worth talking again about the O-line. This unit is also coming together – remember we’re starting two new guys this year. The pass blocking is clearly tons better than the Packers (and yes we have to mention the Packers – we beat them twice). (OK comparing our guys to the Packers guys is an insult; I just wanted to mention beating the Packers twice is the definition of a great year.) But back to the line – McKinnie is having a Pro Bowl season (by the way go and vote), Hutch is playing great even with his back injury and Phil looks like the real deal at right tackle. The opposing defenses are still stacking the box to stop Adrian and the O-line has had some difficulties opening the running lanes. But, think about this the Vikes are 7 and 1 and the passing game is working – teams aren’t going to stay with a game plan where they continually loose, watch for the line to open more holes in the second half of the year. The line is also playing better as a unit and as they reduce their thinking, of what they need to do, and just do it – this unit will be fine and I expect the Vikes to keep winning and I wouldn’t be surprised if Adrian had a big second half.

And because I’m in such a bold feeling – let me give you my prediction. If the Vikings are fortunate enough to play the Steelers again this year – they win by 10 and control the game from beginning to end. Think about this prediction and you know where I’m at.

Club News:
We’ll be starting our Helmets for the Holliday’s this week. This year we’re going to try something a little different – we’re going to have a set of mini helmet and football with Adrian Petersons autograph on them. A once in a lifetime chance to win both at one time – OK if you guys like our different approaches to the Helmet for the Holiday’s we’ll considerate it again in the future. We’ll also be having a Fran Tarkenton full size authentic helmet as the other prize this year.
We’ll also be having our canned food drive on November 22nd (the Seahawks game) to support the Orange County Food Bank. Please help us help our neighborhood by supporting this event.

The winter stuff is in – you can expect to see sweat shirts, fleece, jackets, calendars and some Christmas ornaments this week at the club.

Alert – I found another Life Magazine with the original Vikings on the cover – the club drawing will be spiked with good stuff this weekend.

Thurman Thomas
In 1989, after an impressive rookie season that included a division title for the Bills, the multi-dimensional Thomas rushed for 1,000 yards, caught 60 passes, and scored 12 touchdowns in his second season.

His ability to catch the ball as well as run with it was a key ingredient to the Bills' "No Huddle" offensive attack. The team improved to 13-3 in 1990 as Thomas led the NFL in all-purpose yards. He rushed for 1,297 yards and scored 11 touchdowns while catching 49 passes for 532 yards and two touchdowns. With the versatile back leading the way, the Bills marched through the playoffs to the first of their unprecedented four straight Super Bowl berths.

In 1991, Thomas amassed more than 2,000 all-purpose yards, just the 11th player ever to do so. He reached the 2,000-yard total again the following season, which marked a record fourth straight season of leading the NFL in yards from scrimmage.

Named to the NFL's All-Decade Team of the 1990s, Thomas was selected first- or second-team All-Pro and All-AFC five times, and was voted to the Pro Bowl five straight years. Thomas retired as the NFL's ninth ranked rusher with 12,074 yards and added another 4,458 yards on 472 catches.

Team News:
The best way to start here is by saying a win is a win is a win. We let the Ravens have the fourth quarter and it almost cost us. The first three quarters were ours and the first two drives of the game were close to perfect. Both the offense and defense looked good for the first three quarters. The goal for this week will be 60 minutes of football. In the post game interview with Jared Allen he stated the fourth quarter was the worst quarter he’s been apart of. You can expect the Vikings to be fired up this week; without a letdown.

The score in the Ram’s game didn’t reflect the game – I thought the Rams played pretty good. The Vikes forced the turnovers and that stopped all the Rams drives. Without these turnovers the game would have been a lot closer. Although, the old football adage comes to mind – great teams find away to win.

There are enough games now for us to take a closer look at our team. The first thing that jumps out at me is our team can score points. 31.5 points per game – only the Saints are averaging more points a game. Without trying to put a hex on our club – I believe the last time we averaged this many points per game we went 15 and 1. I didn’t do any research here; so if I made a mistake, just let me know. The second thing that jumps out at me is: our defense is a lot better than the stats say. We’ve had some big plays against us (no better example than last week), but, this defense is truly a strength. This defense will eliminate the big plays, this defense will be a top ten defense by the end of the year and being the single best defense in the league is still in play. With that said the injury to Antoine Winfield couldn’t have more of an impact than this week against the Steelers. The Steelers are throwing the ball surprisingly well this season – we’ll need to bring lots of pressure. I believe this week’s game is a golden opportunity for our defense; if they want respect, they can earn it this week.

We’re still working on having a dinner this year. At this time we’re at 40% of our revenue requirements to put this event on. You can help in these fund raising efforts by supporting our club with no better way than just showing up on Sunday’s. It’s your continued support that makes this club possible – thanks all.

NFL Hall of Famers:
Dan Dierdorf
excelled as an offensive lineman for 13 seasons from 1971 through 1983. The 6-3, 275-pounder from Canton, Ohio, where he was born on June 29, 1949, played both guard and tackle his first two seasons before settling down as the permanent right tackle in his third season. Dierdorf, who was equally effective as a blocker on both running and passing plays, was the ring-leader of the line that permitted the fewest sacks in the NFC for five straight years in the mid-1970s. In 1975, the Cardinals set a then-record by allowing only eight sacks in 14 games.

In 1982, Dierdorf unselfishly responded to a personnel emergency on the offensive line by agreeing to move to center. He not only made a smooth adjustment to the new position but he proved to be especially effective blocking against the bigger nose tackles of the new 3-4 defensive alignments he had to face.

Dierdorf was named All-Pro five seasons – from 1975 to 1978 and again in 1980. He was elected to six Pro Bowl games. The NFL Players Association picked him as the best overall blocker in the NFL three straight years from 1976 to 1978.

Team News:
A 4 and 0 start – does it get any better than this. We’re starting to see a balanced offense – Green Bay did a real good job of stopping Adrian, but Brett and company took control through the air. It appears we may have told the league – pick your poison, stop the run and we’ll beat you through the air. I also noticed that the offensive line put together a great pass blocking game against the Packers. This will be huge as they continue to gel - as they showed on Monday. The blocked kick in the 49’rs game put us on our heels a bit, but oh what a finish. Can anyone doubt what this team is capable of after beating the 49’rs in such a way!

And I could continue to discuss the offense, but, it’s only fair to say the defense looks great. Jared had a fantastic game against the Pack; 4-1/2 sacks, now that’s production. The defense didn’t allow a third down conversion in the 49’rs game; that’s incredibly rare in this league. And I have to mention the goal line stand – OMG, what an effort. We’re 25% through the regular season and this team and their fans are at fever pitch; this is becoming an E ticket ride.

Aside: how about those throwback uniforms – I like them, the grey facemask, striped pants and even the colors and if Allen is going to play like he did on Monday, if he’s going to play like a Purple People Eater, he might just as well dress like one. I’ll quickly change my position on wardrobe when he starts teeing off on the Rams, but that’s for another newsletter.

Arizona Game: The Cardinal’s only have around 300 tickets left for this game – it will most likely be sold out by next week. If you want a ticket - now’s the time to act. If you have any questions; call or email me, we’ll work something out.

For all you game goers – we’re looking to see SCVC banners in the stands. A play on the word FOX, a purple or white jersey (maybe a club tee shirt) a hat with horns and pigtails – how could you not get on TV. Give everyone left at the club something to shout about.

Laurie Kjar will be heading our Arizona game details - tailgating, lodging, parking and altogether all the fun stuff. Laurie can be reached via email. As Laurie gets more information – we’ll post it on the site.

We have a special treat this Sunday – Purple Reign Racing (the official racing team of the Southern California Viking Club) will have their car at the club on Sunday. Maybe we can get them to fire it up and rattle a few windows. I’m attaching a picture of the car to this email. Also – I would like to personally thank Randy Wold for the nice word, regarding the club, in the Orange County Register (Randy is one of Purple Reign racing team members).

Smith was a talented receiver, a punishing blocker, a fierce competitor and an excellent runner after he caught the ball. He even handled the Cardinals' punting chores his first three seasons.

Smith became the Cardinals' starting tight end during his 1963 rookie season and remained a fixture at that spot the rest of his tenure in St. Louis.

He played in 121 straight games starting with his first NFL contest and continuing until a knee injury sidelined him in his ninth season in 1971.

Team News:
Two slow starts and two games where we didn’t have to sweat out the ending – I can’t remember the last time that’s happened. The team found ways to beat the Brown’s and the Lion’s in a convincing manor. I think the team will put a halt to the slow starts and will probably need to by this weekend – the 49ers look good and we’ll need a solid effort. I’m glad it’s the dome opener – if the dome acts anything like the club, the team will have help from the fans.

A different topic – what’s everyone think of Percy Harvin, rookie of the year possibilities? This guy can do everything and he has glue for hands. He leads all NFL rookies in kick return average and is the only rookie with all his returns greater than 20 yards. Tied for the top rookies in receptions and leads in TD’s – and he runs the ball. Percy may win this award this year – we’ll be rooting for him.

Club News:
Arizona Game: The Cardinal’s are now working with us for tickets for the Vikes game on December 6th. The ticket prices are $55.00 for corner tickets and $75.00 for goal line to the 25 yard line. All tickets are upper level (400 level) and all four corners are in play. Tickets are being sold as best seats available at the time of purchase – the Cardinal’s will not block out a section for us. For the best seats you’ll want to act fast before this news breaks and everyone starts purchasing these tickets. What I can do is get each individual party seats together. By this I mean; small groups 3, 4 or 5 people will be placed together, but, two groups of 4 for example could be in different locations.

What I need from you is your checks for your seats – this is how you’ll get on the ticket list. After I have enough parties to obtain 15 tickets – I’ll place the order to establish an SCVC game account with the Cardinal’s. Then each week (Monday or Tuesday depending on the day of the game) I’ll purchase all the tickets that came in that week. I’ll be able to do this through the Steelers game on October 25th or until the game is sold out. This way I can ensure the best seats available at the time. All the tickets will be shipped to me and will be made available for pick-up at the club on game days. Anyone that wants me to mail the tickets to them – please ad an addition $1.00 to your check. If you choose this option – I cannot be held responsible for lost tickets in the mail. If you trust the mail service – I’ll help you as best I can. Let’s make this another home game for the team again this year.

And to finish the Arizona talk – Laurie Kjar will be heading our Arizona game details - tailgating, lodging, parking and altogether all the fun stuff. Laurie can be reached via email. We’ll also be establishing an Arizona game section on our website to help keep everyone informed of our plans.

I’m looking for a little help. What I’m looking for is an event planner. Anyone with experience or an interest in these sorts of things – please contact me for details.

Don’t forget we have autographed books by Fran Tarkenton at the club. You will have a hard time finding this anywhere else – no additional costs to members, only costs are for the book ($25.00). You can’t buy Fran’s autograph on the net anywhere for the price of the book.

Anyone going to the Steelers game – please contact Michael Turnbull via email if you’re interested in hooking up before the game.

All club members – remember our code of conduct, we don’t want any profanity at the club. We strive to be the best club around and everyone’s personal conduct is a reflection on all of us.

, a 6-3, 256-pound consensus All-America in 1975 at the University of Oklahoma, was the first-ever draft pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers franchise in 1976. The winner of both the Lombardi and Outland trophies as the outstanding college lineman in 1975, the defensive right end immediately established himself at as the leader of the Buccaneers defensive unit that would eventually produce two NFC Central Division championships in the team's first six seasons.

Although he missed six games due to injuries as a rookie, he was named the Bucs’ Rookie of the Year and the team’s Most Valuable Player. He battled injuries during two of his first three seasons, but starting in 1978 he was named first- or second-team All-Pro five times. He was also All-NFC choice five times, and was named to six straight Pro Bowls from 1980 to 1985. With four sacks, he was co-Player of the Game in the 1982 Pro Bowl.

Four times the NFL Players Association named Lee Roy the NFC Defensive Lineman of the Year and he was a unanimous choice as NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1979. Selmon was a major factor in the Bucs' first winning season, which was concluded with a 9-0 loss to the Los Angeles Rams in the 1979 NFC Championship Game. Lee Roy had 11 sacks and a career-best 117 tackles that year. He had three sacks in one game four times. A back injury, which forced him to miss the entire 1985 season, brought a premature end to his outstanding career.

Fun Facts and Quotes:
Did you know Don Hultz, of the Minnesota Vikings, holds the NFL record for most opponents fumbles recovered in a season with 9 (1963).

Team News:
The initial 53 man roster is set and the practice squad has been announced. The 53 man cut down day is a tough day for players, coaches and staff, but, it puts us one weekend away from football season. Although it’s always tough to make the cuts; the team also understands these are the rules and all the decisions made were for the benefit of the team, and that’s a positive you can hang your hat on. Here’s a little reminder for you before I move on: any team that claims a player off of waivers, must place him on the 53-man roster and he must remain there. Any player picked up on waivers must be released if things don’t work out – they cannot be placed on the claiming teams practice squad.

Club News:
Remember to get your dues in before next week’s game. Dues will remain $20.00 for the season. As an effort to help our club members out in this economy – the club will be sponsoring five club members this year. We’ll be putting all the names in a hat (well, actually it will be the number each person has on my list) and drawing the five names. The rules are simple – you had to be a member last season, otherwise you have no number and your odds of being chosen are greatly reduced. I should have these names by the first game. We’ll reimburse the winners at the game – seeing how I’m sure you’ll be there and your dues will already be paid. Anyway this is our gift to you – good luck to all.

Northwood pizza is under new management and is being completely overhauled at this time. Everything will be new; walls, ceiling, bathrooms, furniture and yes televisions. Carpeting is gone – tile floors are being installed. The place is having everything replaced except the Southern California Viking Club sign. The new owner, Brian An, also owns the yogurt shop two doors down from Northwood Pizza – I’m thinking we’ll be adding frozen yogurt to the menu. The place is coming along and all the new televisions will be in place for the start of the season. Everything high definition and everything state of the art – the place is going to be great; the place is going to be all new.

OK –because I believe there may be a little excitement in the air, we open on the road at Cleveland on the 13th, to help with the excitement – I’ll bring an Adrian Peterson autographed item, for one of our drawings, to help in your decision to enjoy the opener with us. I’m not sure what else I’ll bring – when we have AD items, we’ll everything else seems second best. So anyway, please start the year off with a bang and join us for the opener.

New tee shirts are in, new club polo’s are in, as well as club hats; along with our usual stuff. Our guests at the Minnesota dinner signed items for our club drawings – remember we had Hall of Fame member Randall McDaniel and Ring of Honor members Bill “Boom-Boom” Brown and Mick Tingelhoff along with a host of others. Our drawings will again be the best in the country.

For all you planners out there – we’re reasonably optimistic that we’ll be having a California dinner this year. As in the past – it does depend on our revenues, our charities come first. The primary ways we raise our revenues are through our drawings at the club – the support you show, with these fund raising efforts, makes everything else happen. So please, join us for the games.

See you all at Northwood,

Club Members,

Training camp is over, a couple of pre-season games under our belt, an answer to a quarterback question and I made it back from Minnesota. Yes it’s time for some football. First the camp – we had another great year at camp. About 20 members were in Mankato for each day of training camp. The Vikings gave us the VIP treatment once again and we were present for some contact practices. The team really looked crisp in practice. The team was conducting practices with referees during drills and not too many yellow flags hit the ground. Nikki Myers (our club contact at the Vikings) stated that Zygi Wilf was spotted at training camp wearing this year’s club tee shirt. If anyone got the picture – please send it to me (website material).

The dinner was a huge success – approximately 30 members showed up for this event and we had a blast. Bob Lurtsema was there and was the life of the party. During Bob’s address to the club he told Randall McDaniel if Randall was playing when he was playing; he would have lined up across from him and ran right through him. Only when Bob tells the story he used a little more colorful language. The evening went from there – a real pleasure, it was truly a night to remember. Randall was there again and Dave Osborn and Bill “Boom-Boom” Brown both predicted (with incredible accuracy) the Brett Favre quarterback scenario. We had three different players mention that Mick Tingelhoff should be in the hall of fame. As a club our work isn’t done – we need to let the selection committee know what we think of this injustice.

And we can’t forget the Winter Park tour. This year was a little different because the team was back at Winter Park – all the lockers were full and the entire weight room was there. Visanthe Shiancoe is my new hero – when we passed his locker our club tee shirt, from last year, was hanging there, how cool is that. Nikki and CJ conducted the tour and joined us for dinner. I can’t thank the Vikings organization enough for how they treated us and continue to help us as a club and non-profit organization.

I personally hung out in Minnesota a little longer than most and caught the Chief’s game. I went into this game like everyone else – thinking it was the Brett Favre début, but left seeing one of the greatest defensive stands of all time. OK – the starters weren’t in, but, to win the game defending your goal line is impressive. What an effort – our guys defended that white line like it was their first born – nobody was going to cross that line and nobody did.

We now need to ramp up for the start of the season and that means dues time. Please submit your dues by September 10th to help facilitate the start of the season. For those of you who have submitted your dues – I thank you and I will be caught up by the end of the week.

Northwood Pizza is under new management; Bill sold to Brian An, who owns the yogurt shop in the complex. You would not believe the place now – new TV’s and a lot of other upgrades. This is still our home and we wish Bill the best as well as we hope the best for Brian. Stop down and check out the new place.

And finally – we will be meeting for the Monday night pre-season game against the Texan’s. New club tees will be there on display; but that is all, saving the rest for opening day.

Training Camp:

Please get your information to me soon if you’re planning on attending training camp this year. I will need to know by August 4th (two weeks from now). I need to arrange field passes and get the dinner headcount submitted to Majors Sports Grill.

Our training camp visit will be on Monday August 10th through Wednesday August 12th. The 12th will not be an “On Field” day – fan appreciation day by the Vikings and the whole team will be out for autographs that day.

We’ll be staying at the Day’s Inn in Mankato again this year. The cost will be $55.00 + tax a night and you must say you are with the Southern California Viking Club when you make your reservation to receive this price. The Day’s Inn is located at 1285 Range Street, Mankato, MN 56001. Their phone number is 507-387-3332. Please make your own reservations with the Day’s Inn.

Our club dinner will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm at Majors Sports Café in Bloomington. We’ll be enjoying a private room for our club and honored guests. The cost for this event is only what you order from the menu; with prices ranging from $10.00 to $25.00. A range of dinner choices will be available from burgers to fish or steak. It’s a great place to bring the wife and kids – there is truly something everyone will enjoy and prices to match everyone’s checkbook. Major’s is located at 8301 Normandale Boulevard, Bloomington, MN 55438. Their phone number is 952-835-8308. The major intersection is the 494 freeway and Normandale Boulevard.

For the dinner we have confirmed guests of Stu Voigt, Dave Osborn, Mick Tingelhoff, Rickey Young, Randall McDaniel and Bill “Boom-Boom” Brown. Each guest will address the group with a few short words and an autograph session will be held at the end of the dinner. Mick, Bill and Randall are Vikings Ring of Honor members and Randall is being selected into the Hall of Fame the Saturday prior to our dinner. Please come and support all our honored guests – we are very excited to have the very best of Viking alums attending this year’s dinner.

We will be staying at the Fairfield Inn Minneapolis Bloomington / Mall of America while in Bloomington. The phone number is 952-858-8475. Their address is: 2401 American Boulevard East Bloomington, MN 55425. They will shuttle to the mall if you need to get those Viking gifts and they will shuttle to the airport if you want to save a day of car rental.

We are scheduling a Winter Park tour and the Vikings are working real hard with us on this event. If we can fit in a tour late afternoon prior to dinner, we’ll do that, Winter Park and Major’s are very close. This would give you all a chance to spend time during the day at the mall or just relax visiting with friends and club members prior to the tour and dinner. Final scheduling at Winter Park is being reviewed – if this timing doesn’t fit we’ll work something else out. Thanks for your patience with this event.

Training Camp:

It’s time to reserve your spot for training camp – the big event is coming sooner than you think. This year has the potential of being the most exciting camp in the Brad Childress era. See Percy Harvin in action – is he the next big time play maker in the NFL? Will the entire left side of our offensive line make it to the Pro Bowl? Just how much better will our defense be with a healthy E.J. Henderson? Will Phil Loadholt and John Sullivan take their place in Vike’s history by producing one of the best O-lines in the NFL? And yes – will Brett Favre finally wear the correct uniform; the uniform you must wear to truly be recognized as one of the greats? As you can see – this camp is shaping up to be one of the best camps in recent history and the answers to the above questions start coming in focus while you visit camp.

Our training camp visit will be from Monday August 10th through Thursday August 13th. Please make your travel plans so you can attend events on these days. Please contact me and let me know as soon as possible if you are planning on making this year’s trip and what events you’ll be attending.

We will be in Mankato attending practice on Monday and Tuesday, August 10th and 11th. We are also staying for the final practice on Wednesday August 12th; to attend any last practice fan appreciation celebration the Vikings may be planning. We will not be making this one of our typical practice days due to the likelihood of only one practice that day – the Vikings have to travel to Indianapolis for Friday’s game.

For the dinner we have confirmed guests of Stu Voigt, Dave Osborn, Mick Tingelhoff, Rickey Young and Randall McDaniel. Remember Randall is being inducted into the Hall of Fame the Saturday before our dinner – this is a real treat for everyone who attends this dinner. We have more invitations out and we hope the guest list grows. This will be an evening to remember.

We are planning a Winter Park Tour for Thursday August 13th as well. The final time hasn’t been locked down at this point.

Training Camp Update:

Our training camp visit will be from Monday August 10th through Thursday August 13th. Please make your travel plans so you can attend events on these days.

What we know is that we’ll be in Mankato for practice on Monday and Tuesday (August 10th and 11th) and we’re hoping everything is similar to previous trips. By this I mean – expect two practices each day, a morning and an afternoon practice. We’ll also be staying for Wednesday’s practice(s) but will be going as traditional fans. The 12th is the last day of camp and has a high possibility of being a different schedule from the Monday and Tuesday’s practices. The Vikings will be releasing their training camp schedule soon and that’s when we’ll know the practice times and related information. We’ll also receive special pricing at the Days Inn in Mankato – you can estimate around $60.00 a night to stay at the motel.

Our club dinner will be held on Thursday evening at 7:00 pm at Majors Sports Café in Bloomington. The major intersection is the 494 freeway and Normandale Boulevard. We already have Viking Alumni confirmed for this event – more information will follow as we get more signed up for this event.

We are in the planning stages for a Winter Park Tour and a Dome tour. Neither has been finalized at this time – more information will follow on these events as well.

We will not be attending a Preseason game this year. The NFL scheduling took this out of play for us this year – we hope to have this back next year. Because of this we probably won’t be staying in the same Hotel as in the past. Our chosen place in Minneapolis was because of the location to the Dome for the game. I’m working on a more convenient location to our scheduled events.

On a personal note – these events are my favorite events that the club supports. The estimated costs are minimal – travel and lodging are the primary expenses and these aren’t bad when you factor in our lodging discount the Days Inn provides. The club events don’t have a huge cost associated with them $3 - $5 for the dome tour and $15 - $25 for dinner, you get to choose. What you get is a great Viking trip and you get to tailor it to your schedule. You don’t have to attend every event – I will, but you don’t have too. We typically get field passes for the practices – although we won’t be on the field for the last practice and we need to see the scheduling for the Monday and Tuesday practices before I truly commit I know what is going on. Winter Park is a wonderful tour – every Viking fan should take this tour once (and if you do – you’ll probably take it twice). The dinner is a fantastic time – better than the California dinners in the fact that there are fewer members attending. We have a private room with maybe 25 club members and anywhere from 5 – 10 Viking Alumni. This is a very intimate setting and you really get a chance to meet the players and get to know them. We conduct this event in a similar fashion to the California dinners - the guests will address the members and we’ll have a short autograph session. For those of you that have been wondering how I got most of my stories I tell in these letters – well it was at these dinners (and that was before I became President of the club). All of you can create your future stories by attending these events. I truly hope all of you make this trip at least once – you won’t regret it. The Vikings always treat us very special – just a great time.

Club Members,

A quick update on our training camp planning: As of now the Vikings have not released their training camp plans so we cannot finalize our planning either. So I thought it would be a good idea for me to let you know our thoughts and our strategy. Last year the Vikings closed the Thursday prior to the first pre-season game. Last year’s game was at home which made this possible. This year the Vikes have to travel to Indianapolis for the first game – which means the Vikings would need to shut down training camp anywhere from one to three days early if they used the first game as the primary decision factor with training camp (Colt’s game is August 14th). Now last year’s first game was also earlier in the month of August; so, the date could also be used in the Vikings decision making process. It is possible that they keep training camp very similar to last year and close camp just prior to the Hall of Fame game (August 9th). If the Vikings did this it would make their training camp schedule very similar to prior years. The last possibility I see is the Vikings extend training camp to the first home game and they deal with travel to and from Mankato to the Colt’s game. If the team took this route they would be interrupting training camp for the first game – I’m thinking the team won’t do this unless they eliminate the shared scrimmages, that they have had in the past, basically substituting a game for a scrimmage (I’m not expecting this, but, it’s still a possibility).

So how does all this impact our club? It’s my first guess that we won’t be able to attend training camp and a home preseason game on the same trip this year. If this is what happens we will be attending training camp, scheduling Dome and Winter Park tours and having our Minneapolis dinner and we will not be attending the first home preseason game – the game will be sacrificed. With this decision made it is our plans to still travel towards the end of training camp – we need to allow our members to find the least expensive airfare possible. With this said we may shift things a few days either way of the last week of training camp to help plan the tours, dinner and the Winter Park personnel schedules (particularly Nikki Myers). So in a nutshell – if you have to tell your employer a tentative vacation schedule, use the week of August 3rd as your best guess with the possibility on Monday and Tuesday (August 10th and 11th) as a possibility. And technically; anything else that my limited little brain didn’t think of could change the dates, but, we will be attending training camp and it will be closer to the end of camp. I hope this gibberish helps some of you – if not email me or call me and I’ll try to confuse you even more.

On to the top stories of the day: As far as the Favre story goes – I’ll let the Vikings handle that. If they want a mentor for Tarvaris and Sage they can make that decision. It seems everyone has an opinion on this story and you probably do also. For me – it’s a team decision regarding both a short term impact and a long term impact, that’s what coaches and team personnel are for. The story I want to get into a little bit is the Kenechi Udeze story. To start with I believe Kenechi is a hero for beating cancer and saving the life of his children’s father. I understand there are only a handful of people that can do what he has done. To come back this far is just amazing to me. I’m saying this hoping he can continue and become an all star in this league. I’m also saying this knowing that he may not be able to make the team. For those of you who don’t truly understand what Kenechi has gone through, well, consider yourself lucky. For me personally I’m happy that he can continue to be a husband and a father and football is something to help better his family income – I quit being the football fan of Kenechi and became the fan of the man. His accomplishment is truly amazing to this part and I hope it continues; but if it doesn’t, he’ll always have a fan in me. There’s already a wonderful story here and it can only get better – best wishes Kenechi.

Oh yeah – the Vikings did improve with this year’s draft, the yearly improvement trend only needs to be proven on Sundays. For those Williams wall worriers – remember E.J. is back, possibly the best middle linebacker playing. I can’t wait to start this year’s party. I’ll be back when we have training camp figured out.

Club Members,

Well the fun has begun. I’m writing this on Saturday February 28th and at this time we have signed Sage Rosenfels and Jim Kleinsasser, there will be more changes daily. You have to love this time of year – every team is doing its best to make the final changes to become an elite team, (well maybe not Detroit, but you know what I mean). Everybody has their own idea of what we need and it seems that everybody always gets a part of what they wanted. So I thought I would take a few minutes to explain how I see the picture.

A story to start with: do you remember when Jeff Christy left – it was the “oh-no” we lost a pro bowler feeling (OK there were other changes as well that year; I’m just focusing on this one position). When in fact we had another center, Matt Birk, needing to get on the field and that turned out pretty well for the Vikes. Well don’t be surprised if we have an offensive lineman on the team already with the ability to play. We Southern California residents had the pleasure of watching Drew Radovich develop into a pro caliber player; especially the High School coaches that are club members and all the USC fans. We have an inside track to some hidden talent on this team because of our location out here in the land of sunny and 70°. My point is – there is probably more talent on this team then we are aware of and the team obviously is. Does everyone remember all the pundits pointing out the poor play of our linebackers and the defense in general a few years back? Well look at last year; we lost E.J. a quarter of the way through and we still fielded a great defense. And talking about linebackers, E.J. has shown he is one of the elite linebackers in this league and the trio of Leber, Henderson and Greenway are one of the best linebacker groups in the league.

So I might as well get to the point: I believe the Wilf / Childress era has done an excellent job of addressing the team’s weakest areas and transforming them into team strengths – I reference the linebackers and defense in general as evidence. At the time they were transforming the defense – it was the greatest need. I believe the team will accurately identify its weakest areas and improve on them. They have done this each year since arriving and I’ve seen nothing that changes my mind that this trend won’t continue. This being said – not every spot or position can be fielded with an instant pro bowler like Allen, elite players may not be available in the year your trying to fill a hole. I’m not trying to say that every decision has worked out the way the team wanted or intended. What I am saying is: each year this team got better under the Wilf / Childress era and we are the North Champions again. My prediction is: the team improves again this year and that the team will address the areas they believe they can improve on with the available talent to choose from.

Training camp planning has started for next summer. At this time we don’t know the Vikings game schedule and training camp schedule so as normal – we’re planning around assumptions at this time. Here are the assumptions in case you need to notify your employer early regarding vacation planning. The Hall of Fame game is being played on August 9th meaning the pre-season schedule starts on the following weekend August 14th - August 16th. So here the assumptions start. Assuming the Vikings play at home on August 14th and break camp just prior to the first home game (as in the past) we would be in Mankato on August 11th and 12th (a Tuesday and Wednesday) for practice, in Minneapolis on August 13th and 14th with the 13th being Dome and Winter Park Tours along with our dinner Thursday the 13th in the evening. We would then be attending the game on the 14th. This is a very speculative schedule at this point, but, it is based on a history of events and it’s reasonable to assume this is at least one of this year’s options. What I can promise you is a great time and the dinners give you more opportunities to talk with the guests and you really get to know Viking greats. The dinner is scheduled to be at Majors again this year – a relatively inexpensive place with great food. I do encourage every club member to attend one of our trips – we have a blast, the Vikings treat us great and I personally enjoy the dinners.

Club Members,

Hall of Fame:

Today I get to talk to you about Randall McDaniel who was selected to Pro Football’s Hall of Fame on Saturday. Of all the finalists this year; Randall was clearly the most recognized and was clearly the most deserving of this honor. (And I’m not trying to take anything away from the other players inducted). His string of Pro Bowl starts is a Pro Bowl record and only a few players have had more Pro Bowl appearances than Randall. At one of our dinners; I remember Stu Voigt describing Randall as one of the few players that could transcend any generation of Viking football. Randall clearly could have played on the same line as Mick Tingelhoff and Ron Yary as well as he could start today. He was a very special athlete and possibly one of the best athletes to ever play the game – at any position. He truly was the best left guard of all time and has set the standard for all offensive linemen.

I’ve had the fortune of talking with Randall at a couple of our dinners and the thing that jumps out to me is the quality of the person. When Randall was playing; during the off season he was volunteering in the Minneapolis area school systems because of his strong belief in education. Both Randall and his wife, Marianne work as educators and are truly dedicated to this profession. I’ve said before that the news primarily reports on the negative aspect of pro athletes and the vast majority of players are good people at heart. Well - Randall is truly a great person at heart. I read the other day that Randall is now teaching second grade special education. It takes a very special person to teach this type of class. I’m sure of this because my wife also taught special education for years. God bless you Randall for these efforts.

Randall McDaniel started 12 consecutive Pro Bowls (1989-2000) setting an NFL record. He earned a spot on Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Team of the Decade for the 1990’s. Randall was selected with the 19th overall pick in the 1988 NFL Draft by the Vikings and was inducted into the Vikings Ring of Honor on December 17, 2006. Randall was also known for playing fullback in short yardage and goal-line situations. You can’t watch a highlight video of Randall without seeing the devastating block he laid on Mike Singletary from the fullback position. He knocked Singletary backward five yards with most of that being in the air. I don’t believe there has ever been as versatile a lineman as Randall and when you saw him line up in the fullback position, everyone expected the Vikings were going to pick up the first down or score the touchdown (and they usually did).

Randall; for myself and the Southern California Viking Club I would like to congratulate you on being selected to the 2009 class of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. There has never been a more deserving person, both on and off the field, for this great honor. To me you represent the good in football and the good in humanity; a better person the Hall of Fame couldn’t find - congratulations.

The Review:
It’s always a little saddening when the season ends for our team – there is nothing better than Vikings football. As I look at the season you can’t help to mention the 10 – 6 record and winning the NFC North Division. Being champions again – it’s where we belong. Only 10 teams had double digit wins this year and we were one of them – what an accomplishment. Even though Philadelphia out played us (in the second half only) to advance in the playoffs; the 10 & 6 record says a lot about how close this team really is to being an elite team. Adrian became the first Viking in history to lead the league in rushing – wow, 2000 is on the horizon. That’s what I call a foundation to build on – there were times in my life I dreamed this could happen; now it’s reality. The team ended as the 17th ranked offense and the 6th ranked defense. A 6th rated defense without E.J., Jared hurt, Madieu Williams missing the front third of the season and Pat Williams missing the last two games, this unit is stout. In review of this year – you have to say this teamed positioned itself to make a serious run at the Super Bowl next year.

Now we enter into the changing phase of football and let me be the first to say – I hope Leslie Frazier is a Minnesota Viking next year. Yes I do want the best for him and his family, yes I do believe he is worthy of a head coaching job, but darn it, I’m a Viking fan first and I really admire this coach. So let the chips fall where they will with regard to Coach Frazier – he’ll always be a Viking in my mind. After the coaching changes phase we get to look forward to the draft and free agency changes. Fortunately I only have one prediction: I believe our team will improve as much next year as they did this year – this team has done a real good job of identifying it’s needs and the available talent to fill those needs, both through the draft and free agency. This team has shown a keen awareness to this phase of football – that trend will continue.

Watch out Packer fans – we own the Norse Division and we’re keeping it.

Club Information:
We’re now starting our year end review and planning for this summer’s training camp visit – can you believe the dedication. One of our first agenda items we’ll be addressing the loss of two board members. Eric Johnson and Linda Millard have stepped down. Eric is moving to Oregon – following work. Amber has found work there also and we hope the best for them and their family. Linda is leaving for a similar reason. She is moving to Texas to follow work. Both are true Viking fans and will be staying club members – hoping to hook-up with us in Mankato or at California dinners in the future. I want to thank Linda for all those bowling events – she ran those 100% by herself. And I would like to thank Eric for all the years he rode the pine selling drawing tickets, never missing a game. I couldn’t operate without quality people surrounding me and Eric and Linda are good examples of good people. Best wishes on the next phase of your lives. As a result Chris Harpole (who was vetted earlier in the year) will be joining our board next year and will be participating in our year end review and planning session. I would like to welcome Chris to the board. Chris has barely missed a game in the last few years, is always pitching ideas to improve the club and has true purple colors and purple values. Chris is one of participants that came up with the idea for a tip jar for charity. I believe Chris will be a great asset for the club. We do have another opening that we plan to fill next year – any interested party can email me. More information will follow as we get closer to next season.

Charities: We’ll be sending out checks to the Page Foundation, The Link, Oscar Reed’s Boys to Men Group and Brent McClanahan’s Educational Fund for $500.00 each. In addition to this we raised $168.00 for Brent’s educational Fund throughout the year in the Tips for Charity campaign. Thank you everyone for your generous donations and for supporting our fund raising efforts.

Hall of Fame Update:
Cris Carter, Randall McDaniel and John Randle are finalists for the 2009 Hall of Fame class. I would like to congratulate Cris, Randall and John – this is truly a great honor and all are deserving of this recognition. Another personal note: if Randall McDaniel doesn’t make it this year – the selection committee will hear from me. Randall is probably the best offensive guard to ever play the game – 12 consecutive Pro Bowl starts, he’s the man.

The Basics:
Four consecutive wins and the good guys are starting to play consistent ball – as evident by the thrashing they gave Arizona. Our team took one of the best offenses in the league and shut them down. It was a real pleasure to see the team play down hill all day. T-Jack stepped in without any visible loss of production as viewed by this observer. Bernard Berrian’s punt return and touchdown catch set the tone for the game; he put together a great game against Arizona. Jared Allen’s sack total keeps climbing and Adrian’s game is absolutely amazing. This team is close to being really special – mark my words. I’m not going to jinx this whole thing by telling you how I really feel, but, suffice to say we are going to be a tough team to beat from here on in.

Now it’s time to think ahead to the Falcons – I don’t think they have an answer for Steve Hutchinson and if Bryant McKinnie keeps sealing the corner – Adrian gets another buck fifty. As of writing this newsletter - I do not know anything with regard to Pat Williams’s injury. I’m hoping for the best – as is everyone else.

And what can you say about all the club members that showed up to make the Arizona game a home game on the road. Nice going everyone and heart full thanks for the Arizona club for their support also. It’s always nice when we get a chance to give the good guys an edge while on the road. Thank you everyone and I’ll see all of you on Sunday.

We’ll be voting for our club awards this Sunday and all that are present can participate.

It’s the Holiday season and once again I would like to remind you to give a little thanks to all our civil servants. My family has one Coast Guard and one National Guard representative in it and I’m sure you have or know people that sacrifice to make each of us safe. If you see any military person walking while you’re shopping; go up to them and thank them. If you see a Deputy Sheriff while you’re in line at your favorite sandwich shop – spend the little bit and buy them lunch. Out here we all know how special the Firefighters are – let them know they are appreciated. We are also in an economic time that has people in tough spots – if you know of someone affected at this time, offer to buy them coffee and a roll. Let the world know – we care for our community and the people that are in it. Merry Christmas everyone.

The Basics:
We have good news and bad news. First the good news – our guys put together two consecutive games where we didn’t have to sweat out the finish by beating the Jaguars by 18 points and the Bears by 20. The defenses’ goal line stand followed by the 99 yard pass against the Bear’s is probably the best 5 consecutive plays I’ve seen – ever. What this teamed showed with those five plays will go down in history. I like how Leslie Frazier described the defense "Our guys really believe if you give them a blade of grass, they feel like they can defend it”. This team is smoking hot – now the bad news. The Williams Wall is suspended for the last 4 games of the regular season. I said earlier that I was concerned when the possible suspension information leaked out. The information leak created a different set of concerns for the league and I for one believe if Pat and Kevin’s cases could have been heard privately – the league could have (and probably would have) understood the players position. The supplier of the supplements violated FDA regulations, the league got boxed into a corner based on their hard stance of personal accountability and now our guys are watching the next 4 games.

When you visit Winter Park you get to see the meeting rooms and in those meeting rooms you get to see what this team believes. The defensive meeting room has a sign titled “Characteristics of Great Defense”. Among the characteristics listed are these:

* Deny Explosion Plays
~ Make them go through our goal line.
* They Have Quality Back-Ups
~ The standard does not change.
~ If you are in the huddle, you are a starter for that play.

We saw the first part of those character traits last week – next week we will see the second set of character traits. I’ll see all of you at the club as our team establish themselves as a “Great Defense” - again.

I want to announce that the club will not be having a California dinner this year. The primary reason for the cancellation is the higher costs we encountered at last year’s dinner – not because our support from you is down. With the revenues we raised we will be able to support our charities and we’ll look to next year as a possibility. For those that miss this event – I truly understand, it’s my favorite event also. We will be having a dinner when we go back for training camp in August. If you have time commitments that prevent you from participating in all our Minnesota events – you may want to visit friends or relatives and make this one event. We encourage you to participate in everything the Vikings do for us when we’re back, but, it’s not a requirement – just a thought.

The Basics:
We come out of the bye with two wins and a loss – with one of the wins against Green Bay, a good season is beating Green Bay once (a great year is beating Green Bay twice). All hard played games and all came down to the last minute to determine the outcome. The big plays are coming more frequently on offense and the defense has been getting after the quarterback – a real good indicator for the Vikes. What we need to do now is: go out there and spank a few teams and I can find a better place on our schedule than the next three games. All have the possibility of being tough games, but, with the right attitude we could also control each game from start to finish. It’s time to bring the heat.

Club Members,

The Basics:
We went into the bye week on a tough loss where the offense looked like they were pulling it all together. We just couldn’t get past our mistakes. So you would think the bye week would pretty much be uneventful – not this year. Can you say Bumetanide? And yes the loss of Karl Kassulke.

First a few words on Karl Kassulke. I never met Karl, but respected his play. Although, I do have a flavor of what type of person he was. During the winter of 1978 my then wife had car trouble coming home from work – yes we lived in Minneapolis at the time and I do believe this was the winter we set records for the most consecutive days below freezing as a high temperature (got the picture). Now car trouble wasn’t that surprising – in those days the kind of cars we owned was a little different and I was the only mechanic I could afford. (I’m thinking our problem started with the car; not the mechanic skills, I’ll let you judge.) Well, as my Ex was wondering what she would do a car pulled up behind her and asked if she needed any help. She asked for a lift home and the gentleman said sure. She jumped into the car and off they went. For those of you that know the city suburbs, the car was just on the South side of the Mendota Bridge and we lived in Eagan and worked in Bloomington. Because of the need to cross the Minnesota River you tend to find yourself a ways from home, but close to a well known bridge. So this Good Samaritan drove her to the front door of the apartment complex we lived in – making sure she got home safely. This Good Samaritan was Karl Kassulke. My Ex didn’t know who he was; but he told her to ask me, he said I probably knew who he was – I did. And yes – I spent the rest of the evening dealing with a car issue.

As a club I would like to take this opportunity to pass our prayers and love to the Kassulke family. God Bless you Karl.

A few thoughts on the latest news: My biggest concern with everything involving Pat and Kevin is the story. The fact that somebody leaked this story – in my opinion, is nothing but bad news for Viking fans. As of now the league has to deal with current and future perceptions of the pending process. Let’s take an example: let’s say for argument purposes that the William’s duo did everything right. They checked every source, they confirmed with an independent lab, they literally dotted every ―I and crossed every ―T, but the company making the supplement screwed up (as being stated in the one law suit in process). Given the caliber of players we’re talking about – these are reasonable assumptions. Now if the process was confidential – the league could make a decision based on facts. The league has in the past agreed with the appeals process – after reviewing the facts. Now I believe the league will base their decision on facts and perceived problems that could arise. That new variable upsets me – I’ve seen decisions made based on perceived backlash. Whoever leaked this story is no longer able to become a SCVC member – new rule; I will find the name of this individual.

With that said – let’s get back to business of supporting our team as they go out there and win this division.

The Basics:
Two consecutive wins and all I’ve read is negative press. What’s going on here? A great quote came after the Monday night game with the Saints – from an old Bud Grant article “You never have to apologize for a win.” Bud Grant. I think we all fall into the trap of needing to dominate every game, but I caution you. If my recollection is correct; at this time last year the Patriots we’re unstoppable and the Giants were almost written off. May I remind you who the current reigning champion is - the New York Giants!

The one observation I have (that I didn’t find in the press – go figure): this team didn’t quit – at all. It takes a team of character to fight for 60 minutes, get past mistakes (which are fixable I might add), stop the opponent when needed, move the ball when needed and score points with virtually no time on the clock and win. I personally like this quality – good work guys. Six sacks in the Lion’s game – four from Kevin Williams and a safety by Jared Allen, not a bad defensive effort. The passing game was close to 300 yards and Bernard Berrian had his second consecutive 100 day – this is nothing but good news for Adrian who also rushed for 100 yards against the Lions (and he looks ready to explode).

Next week the Bears and we’ll come after them – see you all at the club on Sunday before our one week football withdrawal.

The Basics:
We saw what our team can be in the second half of the Panthers game – not to mention Antoine Winfield’s sack, fumble, fumble recovery and touchdown. We brought out the beast a little on defense – and it looked good. The Titan’s game reminded us that we need to stop making mistakes. The turnovers and penalties stopped us too many times. The common theme to this start is: yes we lost three games, but, we haven’t been beaten once. The team needs our support now – more than ever. Monday night we turn this season around – as shown in the Panthers game, all we need is the spark. This team will ignite!

Our Jim Marshall for the Hall of Fame campaign has started. Our mission is to have every club member write a letter to the Hall of Fame selectors voicing their opinion on the subject. I would like to see letters written every week from now to next training camp. We ask for four things when doing this: 1) be passionate in your own words – although we will have help on or website with sample letters. 2) Be factually correct – the truth is always the truth. 3) Be respectful – we are the Southern California Viking Club. 4) Please sign your name with city and state on your letters. I want the selection committee to realize we’re from everywhere with the same common goal – to get Jim Marshall into the Hall of Fame.

In order to help in this campaign we have already started a Jim Marshall page on our website. The page is filled with pictures and facts of Jim’s career. We are looking for more pictures and facts – if you have any please email them to me at the email address below or use the contact us page on our website. We also have 95% of the email addresses for the selection committee as well as the senior selection committee. These will be on the site soon if not already there. These pages are growing fast – check back often, the information you’re seeking may have been added.

We are also searching for group “Purple People Eaters” pictures, players’ pictures (current and alumni), fan loyalty pictures and anything else that will improve our website. Feel free to critique the website when you’re there – when we’re done, this will be the best Viking site on the net; you might as well participate in achieving our vision.

Club Members,

Today I’m writing to share some sad news – Wally Hilgenberg passed away this morning after a battle with Lou Gehrig's disease.

To you club members that had an opportunity to meet Wally at one of our club events – you probably feel as saddened as I do writing this letter. Wally was a dear friend to our club and to me. Wally supported us in many ways – including attending our club dinners in California and Minnesota. To you new members who missed the chance to meet him personally; I suggest you read an article Tim Yotter from the Viking Update wrote on Wally at a Search Ministries breakfast on January 17, 2008. I think this article captured Wally. The article can be found at http://min.scout.com/2/720898.html. Another wonderful article was written by Patrick Reusse and can be found at: http://www.startribune.com/sports/vikings/13852326.html?elr=KArksi8cyaiU9PmP:QiUiacyKUU.

The last time our club saw Wally was at a dinner in St. Paul when we went back for the 2007 training camp trip. It was at this event that I found out how much Wally loved the Lord and how truly blessed he was as a person. Wally shared with me how important relationships are to him and how blessed he felt he was to have this precious gift from God we refer to as life. What struck me the most was not Wally’s love of God and family, but, rather how important it was to him to share with the people he loved how important their relationships meant to him. Wally was one of those precious few that truly understood the teachings of his faith and he made sure to follow those teachings when he built relationships – all relationships. I do not know this for a fact – but I believe if Wally loved you, he had the courage to tell you. Because this is the Wally that I got to know – I know a lot of his teammates are deeply saddened today as well as every member in the Hilgenberg family.

As a club I would like to take this opportunity to pass our prayers and love to the Hilgenberg family and his extended Viking family. In our sorrow we rejoice that Wally is now at peace with our maker – Jesus Christ. Wally is survived by his wife, Mary; four children; and 14 grandchildren.

As a friend and as a fan I would like our club to honor Wally in a way that Wally and his family would be proud of – so here’s my thought. Please make your relationships right – if you have a brother and you haven’t talked in years, call him and let him know how important he is to you. If you’ve grown apart from a parent, a sibling, a child – mend that relationship through faith and love. Let the people that are important to you, know you love them and that they are precious to you. It is this basic understanding of love; that I think would honor Wally’s memory best.

Wm. R. Martin
